Banzuke for the French Open 2010

Here is how the top players line up:
  • Roger Federer (Dai-Y) and Rafael Nadal as Yokozuna (=Grand Champions)
  • Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro as Ozeki (=Champions)
  • Andy Murray , Andy Roddick (a former Ozeki) and Marin Cilic as Sekiwake (=Junior Champion I)
  • Robin Soderling and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (both former Sekiwake) as Komusubi (=Junior Champions II)

The top Maegashira (=non-champion) ranks are filled by:
  • Fernando Verdasco (former Komusubi) and David Ferrer (former Sekiwake) form an all-Spanish M1
  • Mikhail Youzhny (former Komusubi) and Fernando Gonzalez (former Sekiwake) at M2,
  • Gael Monfils (former Komusubi) and Ivan Ljubicic (former Sekiwake) at M3,
  • Tomas Berdych and Juan Carlos Ferrero (former Ozeki) at M4, and
  • John Isner and Sam Querrey form an all-American M5.

No player is on a Yokozuna run. Andy Murray would be promoted to Ozeki if he reaches the semifinal. Del Potro withdrew with a wrist injury and will be demoted to Sekiwake following the French Open

Why is Ciliv above Tsonga and Söderling?

Nikolay Vladimirovich Davydenko

Cilic: subsquent GS QF+SFs yield a Sekiwake promotion.

Soderling: was Sekiwake, missed the QF at the Australian Open and hence got demoted to Komusubi.

Tsonga: one SF (AU) in the past 2 GSs results in Komusubi.

More generally, only GS results enter these rankings (similar to ozumo, where there are 6 grand tournamnets per year).

Just an attempt to look at GS tennis through the lense of another sport and its ranking system.

I my view this works fairly well, in particular the all-time Sanyaku lists (e.g., who made it to Yokozuna in the open era, who to Ozeki, etc.).
