Only Verdasco knows why he gave his all in the week leading up to French Open, but congrats to Gasquet. Two titles in a row including Bordeaux challenger.

Maybe Verdasco cares more about moving up the rankings than he cares about Grand Slam freshness. Agassi is his mentor and remember in 1998 Agassi focused on playing a busy schedule to move up the rankings and he looked jaded in the slams. But it positioned himself well the following year to avoid the big guns early in Grand Slam draws. In 1999 he played a limited schedule and won French Open, made Wimbledon Final and won US Open (and won Aust Open 2000). Still, Verdasco is at 9 already, so you'd think he'd be satisfied with that. Or maybe he's trying to lift his ranking higher now because he thinks his best shot at a slam is the US Open and Australian Open.

ATP only counts your two best 250 scores if you're in the top 30. Fernando already has won two ATP 250 tournaments, in New Haven last August and in San Jose earlier this year. Playing in Nice was completely and utterly pointless, literally. He gains absolutely NO points from playing this tournament.

But if he'd won Nice, when New Haven dropped he would have used it to take it's place, so not entirely pointless.

True, but that wasn't a certainty, and he would've had a Kuala Lumpur final to fall back on. He's also playing in Gstaad in the fall, so if he was worried about losing New Haven points, he would've made up for it there, not by playing Nice.
