Rome R3: Gulbis def Volandri 6-2 3-6 7-6 (4)

Entertaining match, now take out LaLo.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Gulby was screwing up near the end of the match with some really messed up shots. Tried to give it away.

His serve helped him.

gulbis groundstrokes were faster than pippos service, but still he barely beat him.

So close Filo, but I am so proud of that performance from you. Pippo has one of the most beautiful games to watch of any ATP player.

As far as Gulbis, that 3/17 break point conversion definitely didn't help matters, but I never doubted he would eventually win. Served well when he needed, and did just enough to get by. Entertaining match.

Good match, exciting in some parts. Gulbis has developed into a feisty retriever on clay! Some of his misses are wild...almost young Federer-like.

Very interesting. Gulbis may have just turned a corner, as old Gulbis would have folded like a cheap tent, but he stayed engaged out there when nothing was going his way.

Good job (except for going 3/17 on bps).

Re: Rome R3: Gulbis def Volandri 6-2 3-6 7-6 (4)

Volandri had a couple of chokes in the tiebreaker that would have been fitting in a S&M club.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Very good for Gulbis' mental stability to win back-to-back matches 7-5 and 7-6 in the third after wasting match points earlier in the progress. I see that he is finally more focused on the game and can keep concentration through longer period of time, also tries to mix things up. Obviously he made many unforced errors as usual but today near the end was very patient

Who would have thought Mug Open would open up on this side of the Draw.

Anyway Gulbis avoided a disaster of sending Volandri to face Lopez in the 1/4..
