Ernests Gulbis: Future GS Contender or Bandwagon BS?

Despite the fact that he ‘shit his pants’ en route to the finish line, today’s upset over Fed was a real confidence boost and yet another breakthrough for Gulbis. Coming off his first ATP title at Del Ray in February, 2010 looks quite promising. But the real question is, can he compete for majors in 2011 and beyond? ......

Well frankly, I see no reason why not. He’s got all NECESSARY ingredients to win slams in this era: big weapons, power, size, aggressive style of play, and at just 21 years of age, he's got time on his side. In addition, with Fed entering the twilight of his career and the myriad questions facing Nadal, Djoko, Delpo, and Murray, there should be plenty of opportunity in the coming years.

Of course, there are caveats and several aspects of his game [and his head] that he needs to improve upon, and health is always an issue, but if he continues to gain confidence and build on this victory, I see no reason why he can’t contend for majors in 2011 and beyond [cue accusations of bandwagoning, gloryhunting, etc, etc, ].

Finally, with his candid and outspoken personality, boyish good looks and charm, I think he’s good for the game. Tennis needs big personalities and exciting styles of play and Gulbis would be a fine addition to the mix .

Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

Gulbis will never win a GS but he'll be win some nice titles and be top 10 for a while. Trust me on this. I know.

That said, I have never truly understood why people here find Gulbis good looking.

He could one day but not in the near future. The top players raise their levels significantly at the grand slam events. He could post an upset though over anyone if he keeps up this form

No bandwagon, for me Gulbis is the reincarnation of Safin with his game, attitude and everything.

Could win Slams, could do shit - it depends. Has the potential.

Too early yet to tell. Lets see him carry this form in a major and for months at a time, and then we can discuss this.

This.

Although I can't see him winning any slams anytime soon. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: Ernests Gulbis: Legit GS Contender or Bandwagon BS? ...

Well, he dropped to 101 in ranking, and in 2 months he is up to 40, and will gain some ranking again...so we may count on his progress;

he now sees tennis as a job that he has to work for, not only a hobby...he already accepts rallying, serving better with less DF etc...he held his temper today after
bad shots...which is a real change.
So if he works hard, he will break through.

I followed him since 2008 and was quite angry seeing him spoiling his talent...
We did not know then, that he had a very bad coach.
Time will tell, but now, I appreciate his determination and progress under Gumi coaching...

Might pull the one off upset but can't sustain it for 7 matches.

Simple as that.
