Rome R2 : Federer against Gulbis

Several people started talking about that match in the thread about Gulbis-Baghdatis round 1.

My opinion : Gulbis plays very well currently and will ponder Federer's backhand as he did in Doha, as he did with Verdasco's backhand in Barcelona (in my opinion, he dominated Verdasco in the end of the match and would have won in a third set ... and the surface was slower than in Roma).

From these 2 matches, it seems that he likes pondering the opponent's weakness, and I think he will do it again (it will be easier with Federer than with Verdasco as he can use his crossed backhand against a right-handed player).

And big shots as he knows.

If Federer is rusty as I think, and his backhand especially is not yet at a very good level, he will fail.

If Fed wins this match, then I'll foresee the semifinal against Nadal, but so far, I don't think he will go through this round.

This is a tough one to call but I think ring rust will be a factor.

Gulbis in three.

Gulbis is more than that currently, he can play many shots with a good pace even though of course he plays more hard shots and errors than many players on clay.

But of course it might be interesting to see if Federer can derail him, and he might have to play with some variety, but it's not easy for a first match to have consistency AND variety.

Re: Rome R2 : Federer against Gulbis

They have only met once and it was this year in the Doha QF. Fed won in three tight sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

I think there's a big chance for Gulbis to win here.
