If Nadal wins MC or Barcelona he'll become the first man in the Open Era to...

...win the same title 6 consecutive times.

Someone brought this up in TT and I thought it was worthy of a thread around here. I'm no Nadal fan but that's quite an impressive achievement, imo, and this bloke is probably going to win both of those titles.

would be incredible if Rafa can win both titles...

Fed was close at wimbledon and us open, but the 'curse of 6' struck him both times.

Wow! This is worth a thread. I suspected 5 is the record but never knew for sure. Federer was so close in 2008 (Wimbledon) and 2009 (US Open).

Kafelnikov won Moscow 1997-2001 (5 consecutive) and made the final in 1996 and semis in 2002.

Bjorg also came close with Wimbledon titles 1976-1980 (5 consecutive) and final in 1981.

Another testament to his dominance on clay the past 5 years. Would be an incredible achievement.

Borg came close at Wimbledon too.

Sampras not really though.

Federer is cursed to win the same tournament for 6 consecutive years. He was close in Wimby 2008 and USO 2009 but ended up clowning up the fifth set.

Now at this point he hasn't even won 2 titles in a row so probably he will never manage to win the same tournament 6 straight times.

Would be creepy if it happened to Nadal too.

Might start becoming very superstitious if it does. Especially considering almost all those players were heavy favourites to win those 6th titles. Nadal is no different.

It would be a remarkable achievement. As a tennis fan, one has to pause and appreciate how difficult it is to win the same tournament six years in a row.

It would be remarkable if Nadal could pull this feat off twice in consecutive weeks.
He holds the records for both total and consecutive titles won at Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Rome, plus he shares the consecutive titles record with Borg at RG. What dominance.

Technically Vilas won the Buenos Aires title 6 times in a row, as it was held twice in 1977, with him winning both editions.

Good find. Do you know why the tournament was held twice in 1977?
