Can Someone Explain This To Me?

See in different countries, the Umpire uses different languages to announce the score, eg in Madrid they use Spanish, while at Wimbledon they use English. But why is it that everywhere they play when the Umpire announces a player challenging, it's always in English.

Re: Can Someone Explain This To Me?

Because the usual umpire learns only simple numbers in the different languages. Other things than counting is never needed for umpires.

Re: Can Someone Explain This To Me?

Umpires need to know how to call the score and basic crowd control announcements in the home language. But, English is the official language of tennis.

Re: Can Someone Explain This To Me?

Also most of the crowd, whatever nationality understands simple score count on those languages but not necessarily a longer sentence for a challenge. I'm sure many of the umpires could technically say it though.

Because Hawk-Eye Innovations LTD is a UK based company and the technicians/engineers probably want an audible confirmation in a language they can understand. Besides, English is the lingua franca.
