Post ATP Marseille tournament director furious with Murray

Gotta love them fiery Frenchmen

Quote:
Hell hath no fury like a Frenchman scorned and the organiser of the ATP Marseille event, Jean-Francois Caujolle, is telling anyone who will listen that he is not happy with Andy Murray.

Caujolle first spoke with L'Equipe, and then to Eurosport France, and THEN the British press, about how furious he was that Murray had withdrawn from next week's event in the south of France.

Murray was due to be top seed in the tournament but pulled out so he could "take an extra week off to recuperate and recover for the long season ahead".

Not a good enough excuse according to Caujolle, who now wants Murray suspended by the ATP, especially as it is the second successive year the Scot has pulled out of his event.

"Murray did the same thing to me last year," Caujolle said with what we imagine was a typically Gallic shrug of the shoulders.

"He can't know what it is to keep his word. A week ago, he asked me for a wildcard to play doubles with his brother Jamie and I gave him one.

"A few days ago he asked me for five hotel rooms and I gave him them. The number one seed of a tournament should have a sense of responsibility. If he does not respect his commitments, he should be suspended by the ATP."

Meeeow!

Caujolle also told Eurosport France that when Murray pulled out last year he offered to play for free this season, which shows that there was at least some humility on his part. But Caujolle refused the offer and said he would pay him his usual rate.

Now though, it is hard to see what Murray can do to win back favour with the French, and while there has traditionally been no love lost between the cities of Marseille and Paris, Murray might have to deal with some sneering French spectators when he competes at Roland Garros this year.

He was on TV earlier claiming that he never asked for Murray to be suspended haha. He must be pissed off tbh, I think JMDP pulled out as well? You know you got owned when Soderling is your number 1 seed...

This tournament was shaping up to be really good. It had a decent draw.

Re: ATP Marseille tournament director furious with Murray

Well, I perfectly understand why Murray doesn't want to play Marseille.

Having said that, promising to come even just a few days before the start of the tournament, and then not showing up, reflects badly on him and on his manners.

Storm in a teacup. Players pull out all the time, tournament directors get in a flap all the time.

Andy needs to plan his schedule better and avoid dropping out of tournaments like this, but then again he had to commit to Marseille before his run in Australia, he didn't know he was going to want to take more time off before returning to action.

Shit happens, basically.

Not the first time players pull out, but I've never seen this sort of rage from a tournament director. Murray's never coming back to Marseilles after this, and it's no big loss to be frank. I get the director's frustration but lashing out in public like that, even if Andy was at fault, does him no favours.

Well he can take it out on Andy with crappy scheduling for the Paris masters.

The Auld Alliance is well and truly gone, it would seem.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

This one.

Believe me, there have been a lot of phone calls about the behavior of both already today. Murray had every right to withdraw, and he did it by the deadline. Who knows what really went on between him and the TD behind closed doors, but the TD should have been the bigger, better man and kept his mouth shut. Bad mouth a player like that and other players take notice.

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.

Re: ATP Marseille tournament director furious with Murray

He said afterwards he didn't really want Murray suspended and was just disappointed his top seed withdrew. It sucks from Murray if all the crap about the Hotel room and the offer to play for free is true, but Caujolle has absolutely nothing to gain by making his annoyance public.

And at the FO sneers, as if the average RG goers is going to know Murray withdrew late at a MM tourney

Which part of "Murray asked for a wildcard a week ago; Murray asked for 5 hotel rooms a few days ago" did you not understand?

This happened way after his run in Australia. That kind of spontaneous dicking around with a tournament director isn't as usual as some Murray fans may want to think. Of course, we don't know Murray's version of it (and it isn't even that interesting).

I'm certainly not making excuses for him - if the story is that he asked for a doubles wildcard last week and the hotels last week and then decided last minute then he changed his mind fairly late in the day, that he needed more time before returning to the tour - and he's entitled to do that but would do better to try to avoid dicking around with the tournament.

But we don't have Murray's side of the story.

What we have is the rant to the media from a tournament director who in the normal course of events would deal with requests like this, completely non-extraordinary from a top player, without batting an eyelid.

Agree. No need for the TD to say that in public,Murray asked ofr this,Murray asked for that...,he is not,and won't be the first player to pull out from tournaments.

Re: ATP Marseille tournament director furious with Murray

Why not make it public when a Top Player doesn't take his committments serious? If the stories the tournament director told us are true, then I would be very pissed as well. Saying that Murray should be suspended for that is maybe a bit too much, though...
