Re: Poll: What ever happened to Xavier Mallise?
I'm not sure I should even answer a post of such untouchable genius, filled with so many inspired puns, but it does strike me that if anyone wants to pinpoint the biggest underachiever of the past decade, they should forget the obvious candidates like Nalbandian and Haas and concentrate on the X-Man instead. Only once past the 4th round of a major, it took him until 2005 to win his first title after six years on tour, and he still only has three small events to his name for someone who has a mixture of easy power and finesse comparable to Federer.
I remember their entertaining QF in Toronto in 2006, it was the first time they'd played in donkeys' years - in fact Malisse is one of the few players Federer established a big advantage over before he became no. 1, but there were some close battles in there. I would love to have seen their five-setter in the second round of Wimbledon 2001 that Federer barely scraped through saving numerous breakpoints in order to set up that date with Sampras.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.
Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?
ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.
