Poll: What ever happened to Xavier Mallise?

I see the way this guy played at 2002 Wimbledon championships, coming in seeded 27th he took apart Rudeski, Crapjek 9-7 in the fifth and fought all the way against Davide Burger Bandian in the semi finals, coming back from 2 sets to 0 down blasting Shambian off the court, but just had one too many 5 setters en rotue and fell apart in the fifth. Wouldn't have had the legs against Hugh Witt in the final, but showed a great deal of promise for the future.

Since then he has done JACK ALL.

Only a hand full of 4th rounds..a good performance at the French in doing so though.

What does MTF think? Did he just have a mug draw (and even then only just fluke through) at Wimbledon 2002, or was this guy one of the serious talents to rival Federer that never lived up?

He seems to have all the shots..overhead smash, solid backhand etc, but somewhere between 2002 and 2005 he developed a fat guts and that was the end of it. No slam 4th round in over 4 years for the Belgian. Nalbandian got a belly too after 03 US open loss to Shandi Dick Rod and was never the same.

He has at least picked up a cool 3.5 million for his 8 or so years on the pro tour, but by golly gosh, why did he not win a slam?

"I did not play my best tennis, no? And..that is what enable him to win..to win this match no? "

- Rafael Nadal, ever so "humble", - press conference after shock 4 set loss to Robeen Soderling @ 2009 French Open 4th round.

Re: Poll: What ever happened to Xavier Mallise?

Quite injured, never really was the type to win a grand slam (he has a good/very good game, but not quite that type of elite level to win a major), and has game and mental inconsistency.

He is really talented and had game to be among top 20 I think but mental stability made him slip a lot...

I never really know who you're talking about.

He ALWAYS looks depressed.

Very talented, but upstairs not quite there to be as good as he could've been.

Re: Poll: What ever happened to Xavier Mallise?

I'm not sure I should even answer a post of such untouchable genius, filled with so many inspired puns, but it does strike me that if anyone wants to pinpoint the biggest underachiever of the past decade, they should forget the obvious candidates like Nalbandian and Haas and concentrate on the X-Man instead. Only once past the 4th round of a major, it took him until 2005 to win his first title after six years on tour, and he still only has three small events to his name for someone who has a mixture of easy power and finesse comparable to Federer.

I remember their entertaining QF in Toronto in 2006, it was the first time they'd played in donkeys' years - in fact Malisse is one of the few players Federer established a big advantage over before he became no. 1, but there were some close battles in there. I would love to have seen their five-setter in the second round of Wimbledon 2001 that Federer barely scraped through saving numerous breakpoints in order to set up that date with Sampras.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

He did defeat Nadal in 2007 in their most recent meeting in straight sets

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: Poll: What ever happened to Xavier Mallise?

It's funny, in a way Malisse's temper tantrum in Miami that saw him get defaulted when leading by a set effectively kick-started Ferrer's career as a top player; I think Malisse had just failed to serve out the match when he got kicked out leading 6-3, 5-5, and Ferrer promptly took advantage by defeating Nalbandian, Ferrero and Hrbaty and establishing himself as a fairly regular presence in the latter stages of the big events.

Yes, after that Froggy stepped it up for sure. Well then there was the heart problem he had as well, but I wouldn't expect 1984 to have known that information.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Serious injuries have stopped him from ever building the necessary momentum to reach his potential. Otherwise he would be consistent top 10-20 now.
