San Jose R1: Malisse b. Stepanek 6/3 6/4

I couldn't see the match, but it seems as if there were chances at both ends. Both had four breakpoints with X converting two and Thunderlips zilch. Radek also struggled behind his second serve.

The defending champion goes out in a quick first round. Not a great start to the year for Steps, but a very nice win for X who now will play Michael Russell.

Re: San Jose R1: Malisse b. Stepanek 6/3 6/4

Steps looked disinterested from the start - was just patting the ball back into play without much pattern or penetration and hoping for errors, which Malisse basically wasn't making. Had a few bps in the opening set but missed them all, and never looked in the slightest bit bothered by that.

Silly considering he had this whole tournament to defend.

Radek just goes behind this match.

He was playing like in exhibition in first set, was just walking.

Maybe looking more at Memphis next week? He's not a youngster, and it did look very much like a tank today. Haas just did the same thing, and quite possibly for the same reason.

Really unexpected, Sexy usually peaks for these kind of tournaments at this time of year.

Anyway, good win for Malisse I think its his first win on the tour since June at Queens, hopefully he can keep it going.
