Players who slice every BH service return?

I noticed that it seems every time on a BH service return, Federer slices it back. Am I wrong in saying he never hits a flat BH return, and is he the only player who does that?

'Pologies if it's a stupid question.

Re: Players who slice every BH service return?

I remember Federer saying that his backhand return is one of his biggest weaknesses. I recall that terrible match in IW wells where Fish was able to beat him, putting only 34% of his first serves in, because Federer would just slice the return back every time.

I think his second serve return is probably a bigger liability though, because he has generate more of the pace himself. On the first serve, he can do things like this:

When I saw Ouanna play all he seemed to do was slice the return.

Re: Players who slice every BH service return?

I remember mistaking Petzchner for having a single-handed backhand as he was slicing the ball ALL the time. Don't think he ever hit a topspin backhand that day or ever.

But yeah, Fed slices back the return even on lousy second serves.

Re: Players who slice every BH service return?

r2473 does as well.

He waits with a forehand grip and runs around what he can. If the server finds his backhand, he doesn't have time to fully regrip and get the racquet in position for an effective topspin backhand return.

Now, if the guy is just peppering r2473's backhand, then he changes his return grip.

(I think doing this is very normal. Lot's of guys do).

When he's playing well Federer doesn't slice the return every time. But most of the time he does.

Re: Players who slice every BH service return?

I'm glad pro's can get away with slicing backhand returns as I find it tricky to change grip between serve and return. The slice bh has a similar grip to the top spin forehand so it's easier to just use the forehand topspin grip for returning serve. Double handers don't have this problem; they can use similar grips for topspin forehand and backhand.
