Yani routines Phillipousis 4 and 4 at Dallas Challenger

Flip had nothing! He just looked like he had nothing. He probably was aced as many times as he threw down scuds and his second serve was just spinning in. Next to no serve and volleying and the few volleys he hit did not look good.

This comeback reminds me a bit of Verkerk the last couple of years. Verkerk was all serve, no mobility, and just ended points quickly. However he looked like he understood his limitations and how to work around them. Maybe after a few more matches Phillipousis will figure this out.

Bad luck Scud. Don't know how serious this comeback is meant to be but he seems to want to give it one more good go. Of course he may just need some money who knows?

Re: Yani routines Phillipousis 4 and 4 at Dallas Challenger

I just got home from the match. I was actually pleasantly surprised. He put up a respectable performance.

His movement sucks, though. BIGTIME. I could have moved faster running backwards.

His first serve was solid. I would guess his winning % on it was around 80%, maybe slightly above. That's what kept this somewhat close. Ivo#1Fan is right, the second serve wasn't anything special, although not terrible in my opinion. His return game was what really let him down, though. Yani's serve isn't good, but Mark just couldn't do anything on it. He had one break point, possibly two, I don't remember. His movement prevented him from doing anything with it. He made Yani's service games look like Roddick's. He got creamed in most rallies that lasted more than 3 shots. Yani would move him to one side and Mark would have to hit a winner or he'd be unable to recover in time.

To be honest I feel sorry for him. He was having some fun with the crowd and was very polite to Yani. He was signing autographs for the ballkids at the end. It was obvious he really wanted to win, but I think he knew he just wasn't there. If he stays healthy and scrubs off some of the rust he could do okay on the challenger circuit. His body just doesn't seem to be letting him move well, and that's going to hold him back. He didn't follow his serve into the net very often, and I think his movement was to blame.

I wish him luck but I'm not holding my breath. Sorry, I wasn't able to get any pictures.

Retire Mark, you can make enough $ from the seniors circuit + have a decent career in the media so you don't have to put your body through this.

First match back for 3 years - hardly surprising. The score is actually no disgrace, Yani is not a mug at challenger level.

I don't know where Philippoussis plays next, but it will take 3 or 4 matches to find out whether he has anything in him or not.

Expected for a guy who is playing his first Pro match in 3 years and has had surgery 3 times on each knee at the age of 33. Cut him some slack.

Well, he should stop yiddering about how fit he feels and how much weight he has lost and concede that he is still far away from one single match win at ATP level.

Considering his form on the seniors and how long he's been off the circuit, 8 games against Yani isn't a bad showing at all. Whether or not he'll improve, we'll find out.

hmm he's actually admitted that recently...

The last time you were here, you were playing in the Champions Series event. At that time, you were trying to work your way back onto the Tour. Is that still the plan? Well, that would be the ultimate plan. I’m a long way away from that happening, but that’s what I’m working toward.

Did you give any thought about entering the wild-card tournament for the Aussie Open? No, I was nowhere near ready to think about anything like that.

I would love more then anything to see Mark back... have so for years... but after seeing him play first time in a while I cant help but think the poor movement is too big an issue. He showed he could still serve well, and the forehand was looking good when he got in position.. but the footwork is just not there.

if he wants to play on the tour again, he should be seeking a doubles partner... or sticking to the champions tour.

But great effort and heart to be out there... but he summed it up perfectly a few months ago when he said "it doesn't matter how well you can hit the ball, if you can't get to it there is no point" - it might take a few more losses for this to sink in...

That's awesome you got to see it in person. I watched the livestream and was amazed how completely empty the place was. It looked like it seats about 200-300 and there were about 40-50. You've got a fun week of tennis watching ahead of you. That looks like a great tournament to go to.
