AO R1: Verdasco def. Ball 6-7 7-6 7-5 6-2

Tight sets with Verdasco's consistency prevailing in the end but honestly Ball had one of the most ridiculous gameplans I've ever seen. With that huge serve of his, resorting to mainly pushing from the baseline against one of the strongest baseliners in the game at the moment. Ball won the majority of the points where he took the initiative, how could he not see that?

He should really approach the net more and work on his volleying. Also he should just step in on the return and really try to put pressure on the server, he hit some nice aggressive returns today.

Only Del Potro can take him out before the semis, and he won't. Nadal is winning the AO, bet your house on it.
Somewhere out there, there is a homeless person who once took betting advice from GSMnadal

Verdasco eventually gets the Ball rolling, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1), 7-5, 6-2

Yes, I admit I did start this thread purely for the title.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Awful, Verdasco was lucky he didn't have to play 5 sets.

Great effort by Ball! If only he could have taken that second set TB but not to be. Still he has to take alot from this match today.

Well done to Verdasco though.

The third set score was 7-5.
Anyway, nicely done Nando. Hopefully he'll play better after a good workout in R1.

BTW ball apparently had 76 winners, was he really pushing?

*Ahem*, my thread title does have the correct score in it, for all its flippancy.

Most entertaining match so far for me, was rooting hard for Ball. Crappy BP conversion from both, but there were some nice points especially from Ball, Verdasco however was far from his best.

Re: AO R1: Verdasco def. Ball 6-7 7-6 7-6 6-2

That's probably the best Ball will ever play in his career, but this was an entertaining match. Should have never lost a set with 3 bp's right away to grab a 2-0 lead and Verdasco set the tone for the match with shit conversions. This is the first time he really needs to defend something big and has more expectations on his shoulder, you can see he was visibly nervous out there a bit but should loosen up as the rounds go by. Should be a thrilling 4r match vs Davydenko!
