i was at this match and i thought it was pretty good quality and really really entertaining to watch. ilhan kinda cramping in the end, really entertaining rallys. but all these stupid ilhan fans, who were attending the match, really kinda destroyed the atmosphere... i mean cheering for your favorite player is one thing, giving standing ovations when your opponent hits a double fault or makes an easy return error is another... and after all, all that the girls could say was "no, that ball wasnt out" (for ilhan) or "that ball was out" (for kindlmann) or insulting the chairman. really disgusting display of ilhan fans...
are ilhan matches always like this? would be a pity, i really like is way of playing, but that was just annoying...
Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the match
Sorry, for annoying spectators. Please understand that Ilhan is the first turkish tennis player ever to qualify for pretty much anything. I am willing to bet more than half of the people at this match heard his name when he played Isner last year at US Open. That was the first time turkish tv bothered to interview him.
Furthermore, I would say that typical turkish fan behaviour (ttfb) at any kind of sports is to boo the opponent and cheer as loudly as possible at everything, curse when opportunities are missed, curse at the officials/referees -what have you- and sometimes, if your team loses damage the seats, throw whatever you find at whoever you see.
So tennis, with all the politeness and silence at serve and gentlemanly apologies for net chords etc does not really fit in with ttfb. Most of the people probably did not know that it was rude to cheer for a double fault. Most of the people at this match probably do not follow tennis, they found out about it through their turkish community and decided to show up to support the turkish player. Just give them some time, they will eventually learn.
As most of Ilhan's matches in Turkey, the people who attend usually follow tennis and play themselves or their kids play so they know what to cheer for. But this is not entirely true for Davis Cup, if it's a tight match spectators will cheer unforced errors at Davis Cup matches.
Ilhan is a really nice guy with humble roots, he is not at all the aggressive type. I hope you get a chance to watch him play Grosjean and let us know all about it!
