The "I was wrong about..." player amnesty thread

In the past few months I found myself really starting to warm up to Andy Murray and it got me thinking most of us at MTF are proudly vocal at saying who we hate, but

…I wanted to know is there any player who you now think "maybe I was too quick to judge", not necessarily players who changed but players who you've misjudged.

Yeah. Rafa!

Once upon a time i used to dislike him but now i think he is a great tennis player and amazing to watch when he is in full flow. Hopefully he can keep injury free this year!

Fantastic idea and a good rep for you for your admission.

However this could be a very short thread. A poster on MTF admitting they were wrong? Now where's that flying pig icon?

Seriously I've never been a hater of any current player, just like some more than others, but if forced to choose one I'd have to say Gulbis has gone up in my estimation after his efforts against Federer in Doha.

I used to dislike Djokovic when he appeared on the tour
Now he's one of my favourite players
I just didn't like his stupid behavior on court, not mentioning his family

Del Potro. I used to think he was a proper twat, but then I realised that I act like a proper twat all the time, and we're pretty much the same age, so I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. Being in your twenteens is hard after all. I'm sure his tantrum throwing was simply down to surplus hormones.

Same here. I really didn't like Djokovic when he first came on the scene. But now I will pull for him over Federer or Nadal.

Same here. He might not be among my famous group of four favourite players yet, but I am more and more considering him as a substitute for Marat, though this might be too strong a demand on poor Nole.

I also disliked Baghdatis when he had his breakthtrough. Too much of a fake sunny boy, I thought. Later on I saw him live and he was also smiling and joking when there was no camera around. And I appreciate his efforts for a comeback last year, too.

Good thread.

Andy Roddick. The initial hype he got really turned me off, not to mention his on-court attitude was cocky and brash. He's still rude sometimes, but his professionalism and work ethic have really won me over. And he seems to have great perspective in spite of an evident desire to win, both underrated qualities.

I used to hate Federer, now I hate him with a vengence.

Re: The "I was wrong about..." player amnesty thread

Delpo. Remember I saw the news that he had some problems with the money distribution in their Davis Cup team in 2008(the article looke like "The biggest part is destined to Nalby. Delpo is veeery unpleased with that.") I though that was probably a bit too much from the youngster..Even rooted against him in his match with Rafa in Miami'09(while I used to root for underdogs in Fed and Rafa matches). But then I was just shocked by his RG performance, not only in terms of quality of his play.Remember his match against Tsonga there, Delpo was sooo calm..he probably even didn't give a chance to Tsonga and the paris crowd. Lost one set in the TB(probably it could be a nice boost for Tsonga) but again it didn't change anything - Delpo had just crushed him in following 2 sets 6-1 6-4 and that really impressed me.Than he played against Fed+crowd and you know how it finished but again - that guy held on pretty nice in that match.

For me it's Davydenko. I used to dislike him but I can't ignore the brilliant display of tennis he's put on since late 2009. Such entertaining shotmaking commands respect. I wouldn't mind him reaching the final in Australia now.

Davydenko, didn't appreciate the guy at all, but now I've seen the personality and game he has, I don't really mind him.

Re: The "I was wrong about..." player amnesty thread

Soderling. I never thought he could actually consistently challenge top players on a regular basis even with his big game, let alone beat them some of the time. I always expected him to remain a headcase who would be a big disappointment and end up will terrible unexpected losses on his record every season. He has gotten more consistent and improved his mental aspect of the game. I think he is a top 10 player for the next few years definitely now.

Also on the flip side of that, I was wrong about Chardy. I thought he would be around the 15 rank by now. I overestimated him a bit and his game seems pretty limited to me now. He still has time to pull it together, though.

I want to like Rafa but Uncle Toni convinces me to change me mind.
