Monfils out of Sydney

replaced by lucky loser Gimeno-Traver, who gets a bye to the 2nd round

Top seed Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the Sydney International with a shoulder injury which also has the Frenchman in doubt for the Australian Open starting in Melbourne next Monday.

Monfils says his right serving shoulder is inflamed and requires several days' rest.

The world No.12 is hopeful of being fit for the opening grand slam of the year, but won't make a decision until later this week.

Re: Monfils out of Sydney

Short off season will do that, but Monfils did the right thing and hope the magic treatment works for him.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Sounds like he should be fine after a few days of rest and treatment.

I'm not sure he is REALLY injured. He just realize that going to Sydney is not the best way to prepare AO.

Yes, he was expected to pull out of Sydney anyway, his manager had pretty much said it weeks ago already.
