Santoro to play Australian Open
After recently indicating that he would indeed retire as he announced after his last tournament in Paris in November, it now appears that Fabrice Santoro will play the Australian Open beginning on January 18.
The Frenchman, 37, has apparently been practising at Roland Garros in Paris and will travel to Melbourne to extend his record total of Grand Slam tournaments played to 70.
It will also permit him to be able to have played in four different decades – his first Grand Slam event was at the French Open in 1989.
Santoro’s name is still on the entry list for the Australian Open, and he remains in the ATP rankings at No. 68.
Marat Safin, who retired after the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris in November, requested that his name be removed from the rankings and it is no longer on the weekly list published by the ATP.
