Santoro to play AO

Wednesday, January 6, 2010 12:52 AM
Santoro to play Australian Open

Tom Tebbutt

After recently indicating that he would indeed retire as he announced after his last tournament in Paris in November, it now appears that Fabrice Santoro will play the Australian Open beginning on January 18.

The Frenchman, 37, has apparently been practising at Roland Garros in Paris and will travel to Melbourne to extend his record total of Grand Slam tournaments played to 70.

It will also permit him to be able to have played in four different decades – his first Grand Slam event was at the French Open in 1989.

Santoro’s name is still on the entry list for the Australian Open, and he remains in the ATP rankings at No. 68.

Marat Safin, who retired after the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris in November, requested that his name be removed from the rankings and it is no longer on the weekly list published by the ATP.

I knew it! Who could resist creating such a record - one which may never be broken.

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

Re: Santoro to play AO

That was a short retirement. He really should have thought about this before announcing his retirement. I mean all the retirement specials are now going to be incomplete.

Re: Santoro to play AO

I hope he really plays there to prove me right. After the AO he could join the seniors tour or at least play some exhibitions with old men. His clownish playing style would be perfect for this. Maybe doubles exhibitions with Bahrami, Nastase etc.

I like Fabrice, but I consider this idea outright stupid.

Re: Santoro to play AO

He might also be the first man to fake retirement in three different decades. He was hinting towards retirement in the late 90's. Then pretty much every year since then. Did he have a retirement ceremony last year at AO? I can't remember. He's had more than one at some of the tournaments.

Considering the nature of the current game, I think it is a record that will NEVER be broken. It would take an exceptional athlete to break it, as there isn't as much concern for career longevity these days.

It would be a highly impressive record, which in some way makes up for the fact that he will only be making up the numbers in the main draw...not sure if even King Oscar would be the perfect draw for him.
