The Nadal-Roddick rivalry

Anyone else gutted these two have not met more often on the ATP tour?

The head to head is 5-2 in favour of Nadal.

They have only met once in a grand slam and Roddick prevailed in straight sets including a bagel at the 2004 US OPEN.

They have only played 7 times, where as Federer and Roddick have played 21 times or so.

It is unfortunate that almost always Roddick runs into Federer at Slams and not Nadal. I honestly believe Roddick would have had better shot at Nadal in all those grand slam semis that he played Federer.

If 2009 Wimbledon Roddick faced a slightly off/sore Nadal in 2009 Wimbledon if he competed it could have been very interesting.

Re: The Nadal-Roddick rivalry

2004 Roddick
2005 Roddick

would have blown any Nadal from any year

pre 2004 flatter hitting attack minded nadal

the 2005 ultra defense- stand miles behind the baseline & speed nadal

the 2007 attacking, plus better serve & more risk taking nadal

the 2008 attack minded, improved at the net, perfect balance between attack and defense nadal

before his injury in 2009 we probably got the best variant of Nadal- he stood within the baseline- he went for winners- he ran down every ball- his serve was a weapon- he was basically unbeatable before the injury

doesn't matter- Roddicks game was well suited to taking out nadal on grass

God is Love. To know Love is to know God. So ask yourself if you hold any hate for another in your heart how can you have room for Love, room for God

Not terribly revealing that - this was the world number 2 and reigning US Open champ, versus an 18yr old claycourt specialist who was taken to 5 sets by Ivo Heuberger in the previous round. His prep inbetween Cincinatti and the US Open consisted of flying back to Sopot.

Nadal looked pretty comfortable vs Roddick in 2008 at Queens.

agreed. however. you should also factor in that in 2004 Nadal straight setted Federer, so his game wasn't that bad even then.
roddick had something to do with the bagle.

So you forget what surface that was played on?

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Machado wins 6-2 6-1

True, although claycourters learning how to play on hard usually have their first successes at Miami/Indian Wells, even while they're still getting caned on Decoturf courts.

Re: The Nadal-Roddick rivalry

Nadal has the edge on all surfaces. Not saying Roddick can't beat Nadal but I would think the rivalry would be similar to Fed and Nadal. Roddick doesn't hit flat enough and attack enough serves to bother Nadal imo.

Re: The Nadal-Roddick rivalry

they haven't met much because of 2 reasons:

Nadal on fast surface dont reach later rounds that much to face rodick.
Rodick on slow surface dont reach later rouns that much to face nadal.

it's a bit funny that they don't seem to make it to the latter stages of the same tournament together too often. generally if one of them is in a quarter or semi, the other has already lost in a previous round, as if they're almost never in form at the same time. i'd like to see a late-round match at wimbledon between these two, as they've combined for the other spot in the final since 2004 without having to go through one another.

Re: The Nadal-Roddick rivalry

Rivalry? LOL.. Since when?

Roddick doesnt compare. Except faster hardcourts. Nadal is just plain superior at almost every aspect outside of the serve. Roddick flat hitter big FH with Gilbert (arguably at his best) or the Topspin wannabe grinder crap returner roddick we see today is not better than Nadal when he reached his prime-peak

Nadal is the only player from 05 on who has posted consistent big wins over Fed. Roddick is what now 2-12252422 against Fed?

The proof is in the pudding they say. There is no comparison.. Roddick doesnt compare anywheres. This era has produce to great champions over the last 4-5 years in Nadal and Fed. The rest including the A-fraud were miles and miles behind.

And to be honest I think a healthy prime Nadal on a faster court would most likely beat Roddick as well. Roddick' is a pretty subpar mover, huge server, has a FH not as deadly as it used to be and a subpar backhand. Not much Roddick really has can hurt Nadal. If you were to put prime Nadal on most hardcourts and injury free Id say he would come out the winner over Roddick more times than not

Nadal and Roddick have as much of a rivalry as penguins and polar bears.
