How to pronounce player's names

Take a look at this, made by Brazilian GLOBOESPORTE.COM.
http://globoesporte.globo.com/Esport...REFERIDOS.html

It's in Portuguese, but it's quite self-explanatory.

The same journalist also produced this video, with journalists from all over the world pronouncing the names of players from their countries.

Re: How to pronounce player's names

that's why the ATP has the pronunciation of each player's name in their respective profiles

Rafael "The Matador of Spin" Nadal
Roger “The Magician of Precision” Federer
Del Potro, Ferrer, Haas, Zeballos

That helps somewhat, but it takes a native speaker to show us how the name should sound when it is pronounced.

This is one of most interesting and informative threads on this mb in a long time and should be compulsory watching (and practicing) for tennis commentators & fans worldwide.

Thanks a lot.

Not for me but then again brazilian narrators keep saying SharapOÔva or FÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ´derÈÈÈr.

re Simon Greul

"groyle" is a new one for me. I've only ever heard commentators say Gruel.

also if the croatian guy is right then the atp have failed to correctly phoneticise something as basic as "Ivan". Croatian guy puts the emphasis on the first syllable. Atp has "ee-VON". basically sounds how you'd say it in an exaggerated american accent.

Why is Phau pronounced POW?

Isn't PH in German = F in English?

Re: How to pronounce player's names

Thanks, I did get Thiago, but I don't hear Alves at all.

Phau would be pronounced Fow in German, it's just pronounced Pow because it's an Asian name.
