Peter Wessels Retires

Even though he was known to be an explosive player on court, and not just in terms of his game style, Peter was a genuine nice guy off-court. His career was plagued by injuries (ankle and knee), which prevented him from getting any higher than #72 in the rankings, and which have sidelined him for most of the last few years. Nevertheless, he had a surprise run into the 's-Hertogenbosch/Rosmalen final as a qualifier in 2007. Grass was clearly his favourite surface, as evidenced by the fact that his sole career title came in Newport, in 2000.

His last professional match was in July, in a Future in Germany, where he had to retire in the first round against Franjo Raspudic. He deserved a worthier exit off the stage, for sure.

Good luck in your post-pro tennis career, Peter

A shame. Wessels had a pretty nice game.

Good luck, Peter.

Best of luck with the rest of your life Peter.

Nice guy with a very nice grass game. Sad to see him go.

Good luck with life Peter.

A quick side note is that while his two finals did come on grass, ironically Wimbledon was statistically his worst Grand Slam as he never reached past the 1st round.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: Peter Wessels Retires

Wessels almost beat teenage Federer at the US Open 2000. Dutchman was forced to retire leading 4:3 in the fifth. But he beat Federer one year earlier in Tashkent. Beat also Safin and Rafter. There are some nice memories for the rest of life even though these wins didn't happen when they were at the top.

Re: Peter Wessels Retires

Oh that's too bad I hate when players are forced to retire instead of doing it because they want to .

Well, good luck in the next part of his life .
