Del Potro quietly gaining ground

Nobody is discussing how Delpo has very little points to defend thru end of the year. He is playing good tennis at the moment and in Montreal, Cincy, Us Open, Paris, and Shanghai he does not have that many points to defend, so he potentially can gain more points and move up in rankings more so then any other top 10 player, assuming he does well.

Delpo has to win matches. The rest comes along.

That's because everybody knows how big of a mug he is.

Re: Del Potro quietly gaining ground

He will be 5 in the ranking if he wins with 5805 points and Roddick with 5800 but he will still be 6 in the race which means that he has not done better than the rest of the top 5 during 2009.

See the projected Race Points:
4. Roddick: 3940+ 360 = 4300
5. Djokovic: 4060+180 = 4240
6. Del Potro:3205+600= 3805 or 4205 if he wins.

I think it is possible that either Roddick or Del Potro can take Djokovic number 4 at the end of the year if they continue performing in the same way.

Why even considering such a thing?

Pony has no chance.

It's because Mug Pony is a high tier mug. Nalbandian will use him as a a stool and show him who the real Argentine #1 is when he comes back.

I am surprised at how quickly he has improved. People forget that the guy is still only 20. It seems as if he has been playing for a long time but he is just beginning. In the words of Def Leppard: The best is yet to come.

Re: Del Potro quietly gaining ground

Yeah I was also really surprised about how his game has changed, especially his mental game and movement around the court. I honestly thought he was going to be a typical tall player with shitty movement and no mental game, especially after he lost the double bagels to Roger at the Aussie Open. His movement on the court is staggering though.. For being 6'6", he moves extremely well I think. Of course it does help to be only 180 LBS at that height, but I have never seen anyone as tall as him move that well and balanced except for Safin, but he was still 2 inches shorter. And during this, he hammers the shit out of the ball. On top of that, he has had a lot of improvement on his mental game, especially these two weeks or so.

The era of the big men are coming perhaps? Murray 6'3", Del Potro 6'6", Tsonga 6'2" (210 LBS!). Would be interesting.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Both Roddick and Del Potro should pass Djokovic.

Yes, very good chance. Although I'd rate Roddick's chances higher than Del Potro's tbh.

Should be an interesting 3-way battle over the last couple of months of the season.

Re: Del Potro quietly gaining ground

I am trying to figure out these multiple posters with such spite and venom towards Del Potro, has he done something wrong? Has he hurt your puppy?

I am new here and i am sure that kind of bitterness exists among other players, but for some reason hes drawing a lot of hate.

But anyways, Del Potro's game reminds me of Safin when he was on(and not going mental), with the flat deep returns, powerful serve, and incredible movement for a big man. His net skills are good enough to stay top 5 or top 10 in the world for a long while, its just a matter of consistency something today's top players other then Nadal and Federer seem to be lacking. If he continues to improve there is no reason he can't win a slam in the near future. He is also one of the few flat forehand striker that has a chance at the french open as witnessed this year, his movement will definitely compensate for his lack of ability to hit a heavy top spin.

i got to ask the same question as serveandvolley80......
Why all the hate towards del potro? it seems unjustified (and dont think im biased because of my avatar)
