Re: Hamburg R2: Chardy def. Beck 7-6(2) 7-6(6)
It has to be said: for all that he's an extremely aggressive player, with all the hit or miss element that entails, he's developing into a solid top pro. Look at his hard/clay losses this year:
Glorious Grass-Lord Houston (this one was heavy, but turned out afterwards Chardy had intense migraines)
Fish Delray (and Fish won the tournament)
Tsonga Jburg (final)
Djoko Aus Open
Excluding perhaps the last one, there isn't a single bad loss in there, and generally they're to quality players, and/or guys in great form. During the same period he's won 25 times, beating among others Beck, Hanescu, Zverev, Cilic, Kiefer, Fish, Baghdatis, Haas, Ferrer, Andreev and Stepanek.
Yes, not top scalps, but it's still a commendable record for a young player learning his trade. He's probably at the start of a virtuous circle, where solid results > improved ranking > better seeding > better draw > more wins > more confidence, and ultimately perhaps a top20 ranking in the not too distant future.
