Båstad R2: Vinciguerra def. Cañas 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-4

Very hard fought but entertaining match with plenty of gruelling rallies , some big forehands from Vinciguerra and excellent defensive skills from both guys. Cañas played better than he has recently, but just couldn't put Vinci away when he had the short balls.

Vinci lost the opening serve in the 3rd set and then broke bat *3-3 after not converting 3 break points and Willy served a double.

Breaking for the match, always the best way to get it done.

Great for Vinci after all the injury problems he has had.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Loved, loved, loved the match!

Vinci played with a lot of variety today, loads of drop shots on both sides. Loved that FH DS in the 2nd set. Slice was working well as well, and that FH squash thing too. And the forehand was firing.

Canas didn't play a bad match at all I thought, but Vinci had all the answers and more.

The match against Melzer should make for an interesting contrast in comparison to this one.

Vinci's two hander has got worse over time, but both guys were defending well.

It's the second time he has defeated Cañas at Båstad. It wasn't as windy as it usually is there, the off forehand was working well for him.

Will need to be on his game against Melzer, who will use the dropshots and variations to get Vinci out of his rhythm.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

True, very entertaining. Vinci hit some incredible groundstrokes, really powerful and accurate.

What impressed me most was his temperament. He didn't fade away after Canas saved the 3 BP's at 3*-2, instead he stayed with him and got the points. Gotta say though Vinci was kinda lucky with a few shanks in the last game, but fortune favours the brave.

Aye. His off-forehand worked well too. He can hit it with a ridicolous angle, which he showed in the third.

This.

Melzer is by no means unbeatable. I think at the back of the court Vinci is a much more solid player, it all now depends on how much Melzer serves and volleys. I'd like to see Vinci continue hitting dropshots that might throw Melzer off; he's got quite a good disguise on the BH DS.

He deserved some luck today after all the bad luck he has had during his career . But I have to agree, today he was the lucky one

Great match, but it was annoying to see Canas moonballing everything (for the first 2 and a half sets at least, missed the last part)
