Rafa: "It's a pity that this crowd never has a nice gesture with me"

Reading Pam Shriver's comments on why the Williams sisters get no love at Roland Garros, and seeing once again that loveable four-time champion Rafael Nadal also gets no love from the RG crowd got me wondering: what is it about Nadal that turns them off? Is it racism? I'm curious to know.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Re: Why does the French Open crowd love Andy Roddick but not Rafael Nadal?

Roddick has always been very "French friendly", even before he began wearing Lacoste.

He's also good pals with Grosjean, who is part of the rare fraternity of "set stealers" from Nadal at RG.

Monfils also attempted to serve in the same vein as Roddick, and you can see similarities in their service style.

Expect their 4th round clash to be very loud and awesome

Roddick it´s more likeable character. It´s an honest guy, he doesn´t try to be likeable.

Ask Sawan.

If you want a serious answer, getting booed for retiring is not uncommon from some French fans, so Nadal is hardly alone, nor does that specific incident reveal any consistent dislike of him.

How do you conclude that the French crowd loves Roddick?

The French are bored of Nadal's tiresome monopoly over their prestigious Coupe De Musketeers.

Re: Why does the French Open crowd love Andy Roddick but not Rafael Nadal?

I have seen a few threads on this topic. I guess it is more like how you relate to a particular player. That's why Fed is liked a lot (and perhaps Roddick too). They have pleasant games and the french love artistic games.

Anyway who cares about who is liked more? It's results that we all care about. Roger can be liked a lot by many people, but at the end of his career if he can't win one RG title, no body would care about how much of a fan favorite he was. Everyone would talk about his inability to win the RG.

So long as Rafael is winning the title, thats all he should care for (and not to win some worthless popularity contest).

The movement on the clay.

But it's not like Kohli said, if Roddick or any player throws their racquet or tantrums, then they will get on his case.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".
