Rafa: "It's a pity that this crowd never has a nice gesture with me"

Reading Pam Shriver's comments on why the Williams sisters get no love at Roland Garros, and seeing once again that loveable four-time champion Rafael Nadal also gets no love from the RG crowd got me wondering: what is it about Nadal that turns them off? Is it racism? I'm curious to know.

I don't know anyone who was unhappy when Spain beat Germany in Euro 2008, or when Contador or Sastre won Tour de France. I think that among all main contenders they were French' faves.
I have really never heard about that France/Spain rivalry.
Nadal is really the only example i can think about. And it's not about French/Spain rivalry since Nadal has no french rival. They just prefer Federer. Period.

Good, all these private messages we have sent each other between French posters have not been useless. Now there is a chance that they believe us.

We have kept our dirty secret in France : We hate Spain. :secret:
They were close to find us out.

I don't get this French/Spanish rivalry either. As already mentioned earlier, the french loved Ferrero (among others) and he was a Spaniard.

Stop using racism as an excuse for Nadull's inability to be charismatic and being machine-like. -_-

Do you know what the Nazis used to do? They replaced their victims' names with derogatory ones for humiliating purposes.

Learn that his proper surname is Nadal, which means Christmas in Majorcan/Catalan/Valencian.

You know French love another thing too : self-flagellation. We are very good at whining about our poor sport performances, never happy and ready to boo our own sportmen whenever they don't perform as well as we think they should ( pretty much all the time...)
This can explain it all. Masochism too often goes hand in hand with sadism. And this could be why the Roland Garros public loves to be so tough on the Spanish tennis players.

Finally, don't take on the role of victim. It's not like the French to act like that, when one takes a glance at any Olympic medal table and sees how high France always comes off. :worship:

Re: Rafa "It's a pity that this crowd never has a nice gesture with me"

All this rivalry thing was brought up by paranoid French posters who cannot properly read in English, the language of this forum. Parisian waiters have the same problem.

What has been said by many, me among them, is that RG crowd, and in some extent French sport media, is jealous and envious of the utter dominance throughout years and years of that oh-so-French event by Spanish players. While French players have been misserably unable to win a single championship since the Cretacic period, Spaniards have won 9 of the last 15 (men). That hurts, and it shows

Let's all be friends and eat croissants :)

Now this is a perfect troll attempt :worship:
Of course the rivalry stuff was brought up by some French posters, and now these same French posters are trying to debunk it ... yeah right !

Re: Rafa "It's a pity that this crowd never has a nice gesture with me"

Federer today:

Q. Howwas the crowd for you? I had theimpression the French crowd is almost behind you.

ROGER FEDERER: I think it was fair, you know. Of course, I'm delighted to see to what extent they are supporting me. You know,I feel like they've almost adopted me, you know. I obviously, you know, thanked them for that, and I'll try to come up with some other good performances hopefully.

Life is simple: people like Federer, not Nadal that much. There is nothing to explain, to understand.

For an exercise in contrast, from Fed's interview after his match with Monfils (a French player):

Q. How was the crowd for you? I had the impression the French crowd is almost behind you.

ROGER FEDERER: I think it was fair, you know. Of course, I'm delighted to see to what extent they are supporting me. You know,I feel like they've almost adopted me, you know. I obviously, you know, thanked them for that, and I'll try to come up with some other good performances hopefully.

Q. It looks as if Gaël Monfils had some very warm words for you at the end of the match. Do you get the sense a lot of people are pulling for you this week, that they'd love to see you finally do it on Sunday?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I feel it since a few years now, to be honest with you. But this year even more extreme. When I walk on the streets or drive in the transportation or I go for dinner, everybody is like, This is your year. You've got to do it.

They're screaming from their scooters and out of the car. They even get out at the red lights and want me to sign an autograph or take a picture. It's quite incredible this last couple of weeks.

It just shows me that everybody is watching the French Open here, and it's great to get the support. You know, once out in the stadium it's amazing. I mean, we don't have a grand Slam in Switzerland, but I definitely feel at home in the Grand Slams, and especially here.

Q. You said that people were screaming at you at red lights and getting off their scooters. Have you ever had this kind of emotional, sort of raw emotional support? And secondly, do you think that's a little bit dangerous?

ROGER FEDERER: Not really. I enjoy it, to be honest. They're really very happy to see me, you know. I felt this way now for a couple of years now, and in New York as well where I got unbelievable, tremendous support. I think they really wanted to see me do well, you know, after maybe sort of a rocky season last year.

I think they really wanted me to win the US Open. I felt it a little bit in New York,to be honest.

Fed likes reminding everyone the crowds are supporting him... here in RG, Wimbledon last year and now the US Open

Yeah, in RG it's a real mutual admiration society.

fastclay that last post about AO/FO was hilarious.

AJ glad to see your trolling duties are never finished.

I am kind of surprised that some of the more blunt posters here don't find the love affair between the French Open crowd and Federer extremely cheesy and smarmy.

Maybe Nadal hate tends to sidetrack them or sweeten them up on the subject. Or maybe they're smarmy too.

Paraphrasing Morrissey almost wins me over.

But your unwavering belief that only your voice is allowed does not.

My first post in this thread was that Nadal should suck it up and shouldn't have said it. At this point you're just complaining -- as usual - that I don't agree with you.

Heil Action Jackson, harsh enforcer of the tone and opinion of all threads in GM.

A Moderator's duty, and lame-ass picture icons and one-word posts will be employed with Shock and Awe dullness to enforce it.

PS: Why do I have the feeling this thread has legs regardless of whether I post to it? I'm off to live for a while. Have fun AJ.

Federer loves France and is a fluent French speaker, this is a big thing to them.

If you can speak the language when you are interviewed on court they will love you.

Jürgen Melzer spoke French after he beat Federer in Monte Carlo this year and the crowd did not give him any appreciation for that. They had wanted a Fedal final and were disappointed.

action - just because I point out that the French crowd are acting like a bunch of primitive apes doesn't mean I'm crying about it. Big difference there. I'm just stating COLD HARD facts.
