Re: dick enberg and bud collins need to retire

Would you rather they hire Jim Ross from the WWE so he can yell "OH MY GOD P-MAC, THIS MATCH IS A SLOBBERKNOCKER!"?

Actually that'd be pretty awesome. But Enberg is good....Collins I agree he's done.

I sorta like Collins, yea he's old but he knows a lot about tennis history. You are probably to young to remember when Collins, Dell, and MacKay did tennis virtually every week.

Re: dick enberg and bud collins need to retire

I agree both guys are too old and should be retired from live commentary.

When Collins is allowed to interview players they all look at him like he's a crazy old man and it's hard to watch. However he's ok in the little history clips they do on tennis channel.

Enberg doesn't know what he's talking about too often. In Australia he asked Cahill if he liked "that play from Nadal" after Federer hit a short slice that brought Nadal in to the net as if Nadal came in by choice, and Cahill said "I don't mind that play by Federer" .

I've been watching the French Open on http://www.tennis-channel.tv. It's great to be able to zoom around the courts at will, but I could certainly do without the average commentary, which is really geared for the tennis novice.

In the age of the internet and live streaming, we should be able to have commentary optional. Better yet, to choose your own audio feed. I wouldn't mind a couple of experts commenting over a beer and shooting the shit in a more relaxed style.

A few of you here would make pretty good commentators I reckon...

Whenever any Aussie commentator covers a match an Aussie is competing in, they become biased cheerleaders for that player even if it's Tomic ranked in the 300's. As if he has a chance. They kept on making excuses for why Hewitt was getting flogged like, he's not match fit, he's been injured. Like if he had a few matches under his belt in the lead up to RG he'd have been able to beat Nadal? They kept referring to victories Hewitt had over Nadal like 3 years ago which mean nothing now. A lot has changed since then. Nadal has gotten much better and Hewitt, well, he's gotten older and perhaps a step or two slower.

Looks like commentators are shithouse all around.

You are so right. The Tennis Channel streams are awesome. But most of that commentary is pathetic.. I've had some streams in the past where there was no commentary but you still got the sounds of the shots and the crowd. I even tried mute on a few of them, but then you lose the environmental sounds.

The worst offenders are the ones that worship the ground king federer walks on and have multiple orgasms every time hits a average winner.

Enberg can be alright. But he is to biographical. During an important point vs Murray began tell about soemthing from Tipsy's past.

Re: dick enberg and bud collins need to retire

I absolutely cannot stand Enberg. Half the time he doesn't seem to understand what's going on, but he never shuts up. And he has to find the most convoluted way to say something, I guess because he thinks he's being poetic. He just sounds stupid.

Barry McKay and Mary Carillo aren't far behind on my list of least favorites. Ted Robinson is like an ADD child. He can't concentrate for more than 7 seconds at a time, and he seems to drag John McEnroe off topic as well. I use to like McEnroe well enough, but recently he just seems to be even more egotistical then I remembered.

The bottom line is that no commentary would probably be the best choice, but if we have to have commentators, I'd like someone who sticks to talking about the actual match we're watching and doesn't feel the need to fill every second of air time with words.

Re: dick enberg and bud collins need to retire

A good commentary should have good knowledge of the 2 players playing and talk about their strenghts and weaknesses and how the other player can win. Also they do not have to talk after every single point, nowadays they fell like they must talk after every point or else there not doing there job.

In big emotional moments when the crowd is really into it, do not talk at all. Let the viewer soak up the atmosphere.
