What is the longest undefeated streak in a grandslam?

Nadal already has won his first 4 french opens, he's undefeated in this tournament. Is this a record for a grandslam on the men's side?

I know that Monica Seles on the women's side had a 33-0 record at the Australian Open. She won 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996 and made the semis in 1999. She had never lost before that semi. I think that was the longest undefeated streak for men & women?

Can anyone confirm? Thanks. Also did Nadal have 28 wins in the first 4 french opens or did he win some matches by default of his opponent? I'm too lazy to check. Nadal might be breaking Seles' record? or someone else owns it?

Re: What is the longest undefeated streak in a grandslam?

Federer and Borg at Wimbledon with 41 consecutive wins each. They won 5 in a row and lost in the final whilst going for 6 consecutive titles.

P.S. Don't bother spitting out WTA stats, it's not considered TENNIS around here. Actually, it's rubbish, that's what explains the "extraordinary" records compared to the ATP.

Re: What is the longest undefeated streak in a grandslam?

Fed got one walkover from Haas in 2007. So 40. Borg really did 41.

Nadal career prediction: 6 RG, 2 Wimbledon, 1 Australian Open, 1 US Open, 2 Master Cup, 20 Master Series, 65 titles.
(Predicted before RG 2008 when he had 3xRG)

Re: What is the longest undefeated streak in a grandslam?

Thanks for the correction. So, yeah in the open era, Borg has the record of 41 consecutives wins at the same slam.

Big Bill Tilden won 6 Consecutive US opens but I believe in those days that the holdr would only play the final when defending the tournament. i.e Nadal would be waiting in the final to play whoever emerges from the field.

P.S. I need to verify but I am almost certain that he only had to play the final to defend his crown.

It's not true. That ended in 1911 or 1912.

Re: What is the longest undefeated streak in a grandslam?

I said UNDEFEATED... meaning that they had never lost in the tournament prior to that streak, starting with the first match they ever played in the tournament... Federer for example had lost matches at the us open before his 5 in a row so it doesn't count. Seles and Nadal never lost in these grandslams and won their "first 33 matches" or "first 28 matches"...

Re: What is the longest undefeated streak in a grandslam?

Here is the list of longest streaks ever (not what you are asking)

Longest winning streaks at a
Grand Slam, all-time Slam Player Streak
'76-81 Wimbledon B. Borg 41
'03-08 Wimbledon R. Federer 40
'04-08 U.S. Open R. Federer 34
'97-01 Wimbledon P. Sampras 31
'05-09 French Open R. Nadal 29
'78-81 French Open B. Borg 28
'85-88 U.S. Open I. Lendl 27

Speaking of which, how many players in the open era - who participated at least once at a certain grand slam - has never been defeated at said grand slam?

It would be good to know which player holds the record for longest defeated streak in a slam.

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

Agreed. It is so disgusting to read men's comments saying that one gender has never produced anyone who can play tennis.
