Isner pulls out of French Open
Thursday, May 21, 2009 9:51 AM ET
PARIS (AP) -- John Isner of the United States pulled out of the French Open on Thursday because of illness.

The 114th-ranked Isner earned a wild card for Roland Garros by winning a qualifying event held by the U.S. Tennis Association. The USTA said it will return that wild-card slot to the French federation, which can hand it out to another player.

Isner, who lives in Tampa, Fla., led Georgia to the 2007 NCAA tennis championship.

Also out of the French Open are No. 23 Dmitry Tursunov of Russia and No. 38 Mario Ancic of Croatia. Tursunov has a heel injury, while Ancic pulled out Thursday because of a lack of fitness.

Tursunov hasn’t played on tour since losing to Andy Roddick in the third round at Key Biscayne, Fla., in late March.

The draw for the year’s second Grand Slam tournament is Friday. Play begins Sunday.

This is the worst move ever! Give it to an American like Jenkins who lost, and wants to play...

Re: USTA Returns Isner WC To FTF

Not a surpirsing move since the USTA didn't really have any options. All the players who competed in qualifying are ineligable for the wild card and giving it to someone like Donald Young who didn't even bother to play qualies would be very unfair.

That's really stupid. Okay Young didn't play qualies, but it's still better if he played then some French clown who wasn't even good enough for a qualifying wildcard .

I'm sure anyone they give the wildcard to will do better than Young.

Give it to The Magician (is he playing qualies?).

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).

The one who should be blamed here is Isner, for not pulling out before the qualifying tournament started.

Why would John even consider playing RG? Delic is really the only American that would have deserved it, but hopefully he will qualify anyway.

My thought exactly. Except that I wonder if he came down with it pretty quickly, because Mike Bryan reported only 3 days ago that he was hitting with Isner in Florida...
