What a way to start the clay season... two weeks before the French Open.

Haas is a joke, losing to Roddick (a good matchup for him) on clay. Retire please.

Someone put leng jai on suicide watch.

Gotta say, I felt really sorry for Tommy. He just can't seem to build any momentum. He played great for 2 sets.

It's a miracle Andy won that match and I'll take it. After a month off with no court time and facing a mini-Fed nemesis on his worst surface (1/12 bp's ) he fought like a bulldog to get that win. Very satisfying win. Impressive mettle from Andy, as always (saved two MP's in the tiebreak). Tommy was the better player but Andy wore him down in the end.

I know right? After the nth f-bomb the commentators stopped apologizing to the viewing audience.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

really high quality match, Haas's W/UE ratio was 62/36 and yet he lost the match! some vintage Haas stuff in this match

however the result was never in doubt...

Re: Madrid: Andy Roddick df Tommy Haas 1-6 7-6 (9) 6-4, saved 2 MP's

Good match, they have interesting H2H, Roddick beat Haas for the first time on clay in 5th attempt, won all tie-breaks they've played, and 2nd time won after saving match points; poor Tommy like Blake has to lose each year a match after wasting mp's

Tommy Haas vs. Andy Roddick 7:5

1) 2001 Memphis - Indoor Hard - R32 - Haas 6-7(5) 6-0 6-4
2) 2002 Monte Carlo - Clay - R16 - Haas 6-3 6-2
3) 2002 Rome - Clay - SF - Haas 6-1 7-5
4) 2004 Houston - Clay - F - Haas 6-3 6-4
5) 2004 Cincinnati - Hardcourt - QF - Roddick 6-3 6-3
6) 2004 The Olympics - Hardcourt - R32 - Roddick 4-6 6-3 9-7 - 3 mp
7) 2005 San Jose - Indoor Hard - SF - Roddick 7-6(3) 6-3

8) 2006 Houston - Clay - QF - Haas 6-7(1) 6-4 6-4
9) 2007 Memphis - Indoor Hard - F - Haas 6-3 6-2
10) 2008 Indian Wells - Hardcourt - R64 - Haas 6-4 6-4
11) 2009 San Jose - Indoor Hard - QF - Roddick 7-5 6-4
12) 2009 Madrid - Clay - R32 - Roddick 1-6 7-6(9) 6-4 - 2 mp

6) Haas led 7:6* (40-15) and had adv.mp
12) Haas had 2 mp's in the tie-break (6:5 & 8:7) - both mp's on return

Impressive indeed, Haas also tried to cheat on some points.

Well, he can beat as many mini-Feds as he wants, I look forward seeing him lose in straights against the real one in QF.

Enjoyable match. Tommy was practically toying with Roddick in the first set. It took almost set and a half for Andy to realize that he is getting killed in baseline rallies and from the Tommy's volleys but he finally changed the game plan and started to move forward, charging the net. It was the right decision and yet Haas reached 2 MPs in the breaker. As the match progressed in the decider the balance of powers slowly shifted toward Roddick thanks to poor physical shape of Haas.

Re: Madrid: Andy Roddick df Tommy Haas 1-6 7-6 (9) 6-4, saved 2 MP's

Roddick turned up without a serve, and looking like he'd been on a diet recommended by Nalbandian.

Second set found his serve, but couldn't break as he was still returning like crap, combined with Haas serving superbly (14 aces!). Tiebreak..... well Roddick vs Haas there's one obvious winner to pick. It was close, but the apparent inevitable still happened.

Third set Roddick better everything, and Haas kinda lost the plot at the end. Cie TTV commentator whispering "It's the voices, Tommy"....

Haas hit a lot of winners, but was helped by his opponent not bothering to run much.

Roddick not helped by the scheduling I think, the ball was noticeably slower through the night air - several players have said as much. He's also last on court tomorrow night, 10pm local, vs Davydenko. That's going to be really tough.
