Melzer beats Mountains 46 75 63
Melzer awful first set, couldn't find range or anything. Wouldn't be surprised to learn he's badly short of practice time here (lots of players complaining about that, only 2 practice courts for men complete).
2nd set he got broken, but then gradually started to find his feel, and Montanes choked serving to stay in the set.
Final set Melzer played pretty well, and Montanes started getting tired at the end (played way more clay tennis than Melzer).
Montanes played nice stuff at times, you could see why he won Estoril. Very few errors, serving superbly. However Melzer is a really bad matchup for him: the h2h is now 5-1, the one being a retirement. Montanes' record against lefties is god-awful, and as soon as Melzer found some feel and stopped making errors he looked much more the likely winner. In particular, his groundstroke depth was so much better in the third set, often pushing Montanes onto the back foot and allowing Melzer to charge the net.
Melzer's serve was very, very impressive. 56%, 10 aces, 83% first serve points won. It kept him in the match in the 2nd set while he was still playing poorly.
