Drug test results being made public is wrong

I cant see any reason whatsoever to leak results. No matter what you think of drugs either recreational or performance enhancing how can it help either the sport of the athlete? It cant.
All it becomes is a cheap publicity stunt that stinks of a gotcha moment.

some reasons:

How much have major sports done to actually stop drug use? the occasional athlete saying just say no in a commercial? any person who thinks knows that that is not going to change one person or a kid from future use. In truth sports cant do anything. Just the opposite. Sports is a CAUSE of drug use. Big money and fame are a draw for many kids to aspire to. In this day with so much competition a little edge is thought necessary by many aspiring athletes.

Couldnt the issue have been dealt with behind closed doors? Players should be given alternatives -like mandatory rehab or taking time away from the sport and announcing it in a manner that the player can decide. Including allowing the player to come up with his/her own reasons for the time away-family or health issues come to mind. And that isnt even lying about it.

Why ban these athletes? All a ban does is take away money from the athlete. So is this a money issue? Money is a stupid thought. When you think of the actual pay that professional athletes make the ban the money becomes a drop in the bucket for most of them.

Even a public figure maintains privacy rights.

People with drug issues obviously have mental and physical problems and need help-not ridicule and shame.

Athletes that once claimed innocence to performance enhancers have been later proven to have used them. But still how many athletes get caught using these drugs in "real time"? next to none. Apparently the only thing these tests are good for is catching the lower ranked player who slips with recreational drugs.

The fact that we know performance enhancers are common in sports but few get caught ought to tell us that sports does NOT want to catch something that might actually tarnish its shiny exterior. It also tells us that the sport organizations themselves are doing everything they can not to find
abusers. This public expose gives them cover from looking like they are hiding something-which they are.

Why not allow performance enhancers? we know that athletes are using them anyway. For athletes who start out from a rich country the chances are that they have access to drugs that cannot be found in a drug test. SO now we have discrimination towards athletes from poor countries.

Considering how many people use drugs or have tried drugs doesnt it seem this no tolerance policy has become REALLY stupid?
Former idiot president bush never denied doing coke. President Obama admits to trying them. Let's try a little honesty with kids and provide alternatives to drugs instead of moral phoniness that they can see through.

So the alternative would be to suspend Richie and putting a lid on the cause? Haha, nice suggestion.

It's bound to be made public anyway. Fans of suspended players will start a ruckus if there's no valid reason for the suspension..

Re: Drug test results being made public is wrong

It's in fact a principle of criminal law (and yes, use-of-drug accusations by athletes follow that principle), that when any person recieves some kind of punishment, it's been disclosed to the public, stating the reasons why.

Otherwise people could get punishments for nothing - like being critical to the official authorities - which would be a very scary situation indeed (unfortunately it is reality in a lot of countries...).

So OF COURSE it should be disclosed why an athlete receives a ban.

Things that affect performance or health in a physical oriented "job" ought to be careful with what they take, otherwise because of the sport they play, such information is fair game IMO.

Yeah, how can anyone hide the fact that they've been suspended. "So Richard how come you're not playing any tournament for 3 months? Ehm.. I fell?"

Gasquet might be accused of performance enhancing drugs if the results aren't leaked.

since Gasquet has apparently known about the failed test for over a week now, I would think the B test result was probably known before it was leaked.

I think they should wait until after the hearing to make failed drug tests public. That way the player has a chance to defend himself and get the appropriate punishment and it will put an end to all the media/fan speculation because by the time they find out all facts will be known. They definitely should be made public at some point though, not only because it would be unfair to the public if there were people who had failed a test and they don't know about it, but also because otherwise you wouldn't be able to trust anyone who says they have a long term injury or whatever.
