This thread is doomed to failure.
An American player could run into a joint orphanage/pet store that was on fire and save 50 babies and puppies from certain death and people on here would say he did it so he could get more famous and that he's a piece of shit.
Dimitry Tursunov can throw his racquet at an umpire and quit in the middle of matches and he's a hilarious, awesome guy.
I'll stand convicted (not of the Tursunov part). I've had a like-dislike thing with Blake more than almost any player of the last few years, and it switched over to dislike the last year or two. Because he just seemed like he believed his own media hype. Because of the Las Vegas debacle. Because of the J-Block. Because of Vinnie's truth. And because --as someone wrote hilariously here once --no one pouts and sulks for extended lengths of time on court quite like Blake. I like Roddick more.
But Blake's breakthrough at the USO was great stuff. And it wasn't good to see him look so lost out there this week. Yeah it's clay in Rome, but he seemed just sort of absent, not even on court mentally. I wonder if the Fish and Roddick marriages have him feeling solo. It would be good if he could pull things together for the summer.
That Gonzo match at the Olympics has had a lingering effect on him. At the time I couldn't stand the way Blake played it up in the media, but since then I've come to think Gonzo really was a slime.
