Marcelo Rios (1998) vs Rafael Nadal (2009): Who wins?

Rios, a fantastic export of the all-court game, with superb point construction, touch and feel for the court against a guy whom whilst dominant, has only faced one player in this era as talented as Rios, although Nalbandian is perhaps close.

Who wins on hard courts, clay courts, grass and carpet?

Rios is a nut case. IF he was mentally stable he would own Rafa on all surfaces including clay. He was the most talented player of all time.

I always vote, even in the polls like this one because it's a quick vcash. But since my vote is the only one, I thought I owe the public an apology

marcelo rios in the same sentence as rafa nadal is an insult to sport! u are matching a no slam nutcase against one of the all time greats in tennis in rafa nadal! forget rios, nadal at his peak would beat laver, sampras and borg in their peak pretty easily!!! nadal in his peak is untouchable!!

nadal in his pomp is untouchable on all surfaces!!

Rios was a very talented shot-maker, but I have the feeling Nadal would frustrate him over and over again. Clay or grass, Rios has no shot. Hard courts in a best of 3? Possibly.

negative. no shot for Rios on any surface. Clay Beast has the goods to overwpower him on any surface.

Nadal hands down.

So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

Rios was at his peak during Indian Wells/Miami period in 1998.

Unbelievable tennis.

Yes, but Rios never played anyone even remotely similar to Rafa.

Rios was a lefty -- a factor which would alter the dynamics of the match-up -- to how great a degree, we know not.
