Re: Biggest choke by player

It was really really sad to PH Mathieu at this Madrid Quali now.

He clearly can not close out matches.

against Elias, he was up 5-2 and won then finally in the Tiebreak.

Today he choked the 2nd set from 5-3 completely away and than retired in that 3rd set.

It's not even funny but PHM really is one of the biggest chokers.

Nadal biggest choke was last year in Madrid against Verdasco. It was 5:2 and 15:0 I think and Nadal missed such easy volley. FInally he lost 5:7... against Verdasco!!!

Federer choke - in Hamburg 2008 finals he had a setpoint at 5:1 and lost that set 5:7.
It makes one wonder, doesn't it? Nadal choking against Verdasco? Maybe he wasn't all that invested in the match...or the tournament...

Re: Biggest choke ever?

Mac Lendl wasn't a choke

Nadal djokovic was a huge choke

Re: Biggest choke ever?

This reminds me a bit of Todd Martin vs MaliVai Washington. Also blew a 5-0 5th set as well

Re: Biggest choke ever?

A couple of days ago at Miami, with the game tied at 93-all, LeBron James throw the ball away twice in the last 42 seconds and Indiana won 97-93. Given the extremely high level of LeBron's game until that point, that was the most shocking choke I've ever seen in sport.

As for tennis choke, Federer in the 5th set of 2009 Australian Open. He really lost his mind and couldn't keep the ball in play.

Re: Biggest choke ever?

BTW Nadal has always had a problem hitting the backhand off short balls, and that shot he missed in the 2012 AO 5th set when he was up 30-15 was a typical example. So I don't think that match should be in the poll. And Djokovic was always going to break serve a couple of times in the 5th set. You'd have to be crazy to think Djokovic won't break Nadal's serve in the 5th set. The 3rd best returner in the history of tennis. In fact, how did that match even go to a 5th set?
