Re: R'dam Qualies: Gicquel def Middelkoop 6/2 4/6 7/6 (2)

I wondered why Gicquel was playing quallies, but it is obvious: this is the first of the ATP 500 tournaments that are worth huge ranking points. Obviously most top players have signed up, the cut is 44! Probably the best main draw cut in the last 20 years of ATP tournaments. The other tournaments this week are worth only 250 points.

Maybe an advantage if you a spectator in Rotterdam to see top players, but it is elitism in terms ranking opportunities.

He's not that bad, was good in futures (especially in Africa ) but you can't say he has been able to really progress at challenger level (several QFs, but nothing else).

In Dutch it is a fairly normal and boring surname. I guess the "koop" part is hard for non-Dutch speakers. The pronunciation is "middle-cope".

I would say his first name is weirder (Matwe ).

I thought about thew fact that the surname is build on two different words "middel" and "koop". The same situation with "Haar"-"huis" for example. I don't know in how many languages it's a normal thing that surnames include two words or more.

Yes, I think 'Haarhuis' and 'Middelkoop' are of a particular type of surname where the name consists of two word that denote a particular location or geographic feature (like 'house on the small elevated part of land' or 'middle of the polder'). In German many surnames also have two words although more often denoting a profession but also geographic features ("feldmayer", "brinkmann" etc).
