Zagreb R1: PHM edges Karanusic; 6-7(6), 6-1, 7-6(3)

First round only on Wednesday, while many players already play second round...thats a strange schedule.

PHM broke four times and was broken two times in total. Could of won it in straights, because PHM was a break up most of the first set

Close Match. Was Roko playing good, or was PHM just playing mediocre.

Karanusic is a specialist in indoor events (challengers) in Central Europe, where his best results have come, and this one was close to home -- so it's logical that he would show a good level of play here. And therefore this is probably a good win for PHM against a good opponent.

How do you mean "close" to home?

Sorry, for some reason I thought he was Serbian (because he won Belgrade CH last year), but of course he is Croatian and at home here (is he from Zagreb?).

It was an interesting match, both had bouts of silly errors, but there was also some really nice play. Roko was actually not his common nutty self, aside from once complaining about the light bothering him, he was pretty composed, stopped himself in he middle of the racket smash even at the end
He was killing PHM with slices in the 3rd, I don't think I've ever watched 15 shot rallies strictly slicing on both sides. PHM would eventually decide to break the pattern and crush the ball but either to the net or wide. Earned Roko a break eventually, but it didn't last long. Final TB was pretty one sided.
