Pathetic performance by the italian.

Slice and slice and slice and slice, it doesn´t matter with backhand, forehand, close to the net or by the baseline, I´ve never seen something like this.

If only he had a good slice...His slice makes Söderling look like the slice master!

Wow, Cipolla indeed has an awkward technique. I saw him for the first time and I watched this mugs match from the very beginning. Actually I saw Chiudi for the first time as well.

Chiudi came out firing and wanted to kill every ball until the rain break. After the break, the Swiss came to the court with different apprach and got into rallies with Cipo. He limited his errors and was waiting for Italian to make ones.

First set was tight, in the second Chiudinelli looked like Federer in 5th set against Nadal - everything he touched was either out or in the net. In 3rd both had their chances. At 3-2* Cipolla had 3 or 4 breakpoints and at least in two he was in winning position, but blew all. Then at *3-3, Italian was 0-40 but came back and hold. Since then it was all about Chiudinellil.

Cipolla has serve like the worse version of Dementieva, he made probably 10 double faults. And he wasn't serving faster than 140 kmh. His second serve would look better when being served from under arm. He only slices the ball - from backhand and forehand. Really, it looked kinda amateurish, but it was effective. Props to him for his great defence, his retrieving skills are great. Speed and ball placement is also very good, but OMFG - that baseline shots are the mixture of Santoro, Granollers and Alberto Martin.

If Simon is a pusher then there is no scale to put Cipolla on.

Flavio / Marco

Two of the nicest guys on tour, no doubt about it. Am gutted that they drew each other, but oh well.

And for those lamenting Flavio's slices: the guy doesn't have a lot of power, so hitting flat shots would not get him very far. Slicing has proven to be pretty effective for him so far, getting him on the verge of the Top 100 and landing him wins over Tursunov and Wawrinka early in this season. He has an unorthodox game, which frustrates some players (and there are also those that can complete overpower and outhit him). As for his serve, no it isn't very fast. He's a short guy who already doesn't have a powerful game to begin with, so naturally his serve isn't very fast.

Instead of painting him off as a talentless mug, look at what he does have. His tactics are great, his fighting spirit is amazing, his ball placement is good, his footwork is very good, his stamina is good, his attitude is admirable and his volleys are good too. He is making the most of his abilities.

As for Marco, I am just really, really happy that he is stringing these wins together and is fit again. There aren't many players who have suffered more injury problems than he has.

Would have loved to have been at this match, but would at the same time be completely heartbroken as to who to support. And now Marco meets Jérémy, so I am left in that same position.

I'm glad Chiudinelli is back. I won't forget his run at the USO some years ago. I think 2006. Great player.

Was worried Marco would lose this, once again no serious player can be defeated by this italian midget...

Re: Joburg R1: Chiudinelli df Cipolla 7-5, 1-6, 6-4

In that decisive 6th game, I'd say Cipolla had more than 6 break points but Marco came up with some huge serves to the ad court to save his bacon.

The fact is Flavio was winning the extended slice fest rallies and if anything Marco should watch some old Mecir to get his ass in gear. Or run around his backhand occasionally!

Did you see right at the end, Cipolla switched from the backhand slice to actually hitting forehand underspin repeatedly.

My thought was that Flavio was channeling Gianluca Pozzi!

As I told Marco afterwards, that third set gave me a stomach ache.
Somewhat of a reference to his last round qualie round where he threw up on court, suffering from a stomach bug and was in bed for a long time afterwards.

Play looks doubtful today, been raining since noon.

P.S. At the end of the match I counted spectators, thinking there were more players and coaches than civilians. 6 players watching, maybe a total of 10 others, 3 of whom are posting here?

P.P.S. Play finally got underway at 18:10 on Centre court, #1 court to follow.

Marco has a stomach bug? Not good. Flavio is also ill. Going well there in Jo'burg.
