Should/Would Nadal play at Rotterdam?

Nadal is scheduling to play at Rotterdam (500-point event starting on 9th Feb). He's won the AO, he has a long way to travel back to Europe (jetlag and also he revealed that the back of his right leg is tight – a small injury he developed during the Verdasco match.

Do you think he needs the points and match play from that event? I have a feeling he'll pull out...

Should he / Could he / Would he play?

Re: Should/Would Nadal play at Rotterdam?

I know he's got points to gain there since he lost early last year to Seppi but I'd rather he skipped this event to make sure he's fully fit and charged again in time Dubai. Does he need the points? Not really. Does he need the match play? It could be of some benefit. I get the impression that he'll withdraw like he did with Stuttgart after winning Wimbledon last year.

Vamos Rafa

Why? He's #1 by a huge margin now, has a small injury. There is literally no reason to play this event. You will next see him in Dubai.

God I hope he pulls out, no need to strain himself in such a dud event so soon after a GS victory. He doesn't have the pressure of points to defend there and the surface doesn't suit him.

Re: Should/Would Nadal play at Rotterdam?

Players are required to play 4 500-events, I thought . Davis Cup counts as one, Barcelona is one of his "personal" tournaments - so that's 2 already.
I think he's gonna play if the body feels ok. Request a late start, and lose to the first opponent that puts pressure on him on the fast underground.

Andy Murray, Tsonga and Monfils so far.

Rafa was the first contracted player to participate in Rotterdam and will be difficult for him to pull out. I wish he skip it.

Re: Should/Would Nadal play at Rotterdam?

He has to play 4 500s. He might as well get one out of the way. Usually after the US Open he is dead anyways so he should minimize his schedule after that or he can pull out and try to play 2 tourneys after the US Open though he knows he won't be in top form. Either way I don't think its ideal for him to play in Rotterdam, but I can see why he would.

I guess Roddick must be the greatest player to ever play the game.

Re: Should/Would Nadal play at Rotterdam?

Why should he retire if he is scheduled to play? As the number one player you have some commitments to fulfill. The fans and organizers have the right to see the best players, even if it is a smaller tournament.

Roger as he was number one and has won almost everything pratically never retired from smaller tournaments. Topstars have to care about their sport not only about their personal interests.

Re: Should/Would Nadal play at Rotterdam?

He should skip this event, but with the 4 "500's" rule, if Nadal is feeling ok, It'd be best to knock one of those out now.
