Why did Nadal switch to slice backhand against Simon?

Does anyone know why Nadal was using a slice backhand (as default) against Simon? He was slicing more than hitting over it.

Makes no sense. He didn't play well because of this. I have never seen Nadal slice his backhand that much ever. If he was trying to mix it up, he still wouldn't slice it that much.

Is Simon known for his inability to reach low balls?

Re: Why did Nadal switch to slice backhand against Simon?

Because he knew that Simon is a mega offensive player who hits ultra-flat and decided to mess up with his head taking off the heaviness of his shots.

Yeah right.

Love over-analytical people.

Because he got told not to moonball so rather than flattening it out he sliced it.

He tried to overpower him in Madrid, and it did not work. So he just threw him alot of off speed stuff. Simon feeds off pace.

Re: Why did Nadal switch to slice backhand against Simon?

Simon can't attack off the slice. Nadal hitting flat would actually take time away from him since Simon has no problem with pace.

He said in his post-match interview with eurosport that Simon likes to get into a
rhythm from the baseline so he tried to change things up to give him different
balls and different looks.

Most of the 2h guys are starting to work on this. It is a very effective shot when executed properly. Most of them simply are not used to using it, not strategic enough to know when to use it.

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS

no more capri pants, no more sleeves, new haircut? and now slice instead of moonball

he is trying to be a hc player now since he won all in grass/clay?

Are you kidding? He was all slice, all the time at the beginning of last year.

He said after the match why he played the way he did. I didn't like it but he won so ...

Nadull can't hit flat, so that wasn't an option anyway.
