Tsonga or Murray? Think About It?

Leading up to the Oz Open everyone wanted to talk about how Murray was a part of the big 3 and possibly the best hard court player in the world. But really, lets look at it deeper. Maybe Tsonga is the better player of the two?

Yes, Murray has owned Federer of late and has taken matches from both Nadal and Djokovic. But lets take a look at what Tsonga has done. The big Frenchman has beaten Novak Djokovic three times in a row. He won his last match against Murray, coincidentally here at the Aussie Open last year and beat Nadal on a grand stage, at the semis last year at the Australian Open.

So my question is, with a clear head, who do you think the better player is? Is Murray the next big thing for tennis, or is Tsonga?

Murray also beat Nadal in the semis of a slam. Murray has achieved more. 9 titles to 2 (2 MS titles to 1 MS title) and has a better record over the top 3. And yes, Tsonga won their last match, but you can hardly say that Murray is the same player he was in 2008. And even if he was, what does that prove? Murray has won his last 2 matches against Nadal and his last 3 against Federer. That doesn't mean he's a better player than them.

With a clear head, looking at it objectively, Murray is the better player. Will that change? We'll have to wait and see what happens this year. Right now, the facts don't support what you're suggesting.

It should be noted that Tsonga won Paris, which is the very last MS of the year. It's a known fact that most players turn up for the bonus fee.

Tsonga has to become more consistent. It's easier to post good wins on your favorite surface every once in a while but the good players do it week in and week out.

I guess Roddick must be the greatest player to ever play the game.

Agreed, but hasn't Murray only beaten Nadal once?

Yeah. I cheekily counted the exhibition this year, since they both visibly played their hearts out. Strictly, it is just the one win, though.

Ok. I didn't think about that one. I was wondering where you got that other win from, so I went to the ATP site and only saw that one win.

Murray is clearly better at this point. He just lost to a guy who was playing in the zone. People are making way too much of this loss.

Re: Tsonga or Murray? Think About It?

I think the biggest factor with Tsonga will be if he can stay injury free. I always view Tsonga as somewhat of a Maverick with an explosive game. Murray is more consistent and grinds his opponents down imo. I think Murray will have the better career simply because Tsonga's body is fragile. It's a shame really as I think Jo is very enjoyable to watch, anybody who plays with heart and spirit is always fun to watch imo.

Re: Tsonga or Murray? Think About It?

let's leave their H2H record against each other or Fed & Nadal out because this is not the proper way to compare two players, it's about titles, Grand Slam performance and ranking.

so far Murray has the edge, but will this change soon? we shall see.

I could not have put it better, this is what i think also for the same reasons, Murray is a better player but as mentioned that may change, who knows, but i cant believe what people are making of this loss. Fernando played great and Murray was not at his best thats it.

Tsonga is a clown and his body seems to be made of crystal. His name and Muzza's shouldn't be together in the same sentence of a serious tennis conversation.

It would have been easier to see them in the same sentence of a tennis conversation if Murray had managed to reach QF though.

Tsonga, no doubt about it
