I think he retired with a problem to his fore arm. Its a shame cos this one would have been interesting. Im starting to like Simon.

Ugly, ugly match.

Simon seemed genuinely gutted for his friend. Looked and sounded like he was close to tears in the post-match interview.

Monfils retired because of a problem in his right arm, maybe the wrist.

He probably had it from the start because his serve were less powerful that usual. And maybe the reason why he unleashed so few forehands. But we won't know for sure before his post match interview.

God this match was borrrrrring.

I think he finds it easier to play someone who isn't French
Anyhow, Gilles makes the QF of a Slam for the first time but I think he would have preferred to have got there by winning rather than by default.
Hope Gael recovers soon!

Re: AO R4 Simon def Monfils 6-4 2-6 6-1 ret

If I want to watch a match with zero competitive spark and many "novelty" intervals, I'll go see Rafter and Masur play doubles against Cash and Arthurs. Taking into account the quality of the players, the tournament, and the round, this is one of the worst contests I've seen in ten years. Monfils wasn't impeded early on and the match never rose above the appalling standard set in the early phases. Simon had already decided to give away the second set before the first ball was struck in it.

Gilles was fighting back the tears when he left the court, thus compounding his status as one of the most adorable players in the ATP. Unlike Del Potro, he doesn't just cry for himself.

This match was interesting only because you didn't have a clue what Gael would do next. Some of those slice bachands Simon couldn't do much with them either. Does look like it in the end that the injury might of made Gael play this way though. Disappointing way to end a match.

Too bad for Gael. Hope that injury is why he played that way, if not, OMG.

Wow that was an amazing match. Never thought I'd be anxious for a WTA match to get on the court...

it's actually much better for Simon to go to the potential QF with Nadal fresh and healthy, this increases his chances.

haven't seen this one, and sounds like I did the right thing.
