Safin/Fed

Never realized how much they liked one another. On a side note I admire Fed the most as a person and tennis player. Truth be told if it came to having a wild weekend out on the town than Marat would be the man. Hope he has a great last year.

Re: Safin/Fed

Exactly. I'm surprised how very few people ever discussed this. They're buddies since they're young. Safin was the old Nadal to Fed, maybe more. They respect each other. They hang out together.

Fed discussed in one interview that before he won his first masters (Hamburg 2002) he was hanging out with Safin and complaining to him about the clay season. Then both of them came to Hamburg just for fun and discovered themselves in the finals.

Safin, when asked to comment about Federer once, recalled an incident when a fan asked Safin for a racket as a gift, but Safin doesn't have one with him. Federer was nearby and had a racket, and he gave it to Safin "without hesitation", which Safin said is "very generous" because players don't give away rackets lightly. I still consider that fan the luckiest tennis fan ever, to have Fed's racket gifted to him by Safin!

I like to imagine they have a great friendship. I wonder why the media never covers it. Perhaps it's because they're great rivals and have very distinct personalities. But that's what makes it beautiful.

Good luck to you both, Safin & Fed.

Re: Safin/Fed

I think Safin is somewhat of Roger's dark side, if you'd like. Roger told the story of how the thing that made him come to his senses and stop acting petulant on court was watching a match he played with Safin, and how he watched highlights in the lockeroom, and how he watched in shame as they both threw their racquets and acted horribly, and he decided to just stop doing that.

Safin never stopped. That's made a big part of the difference in their careers, Roger got his temper in check, Safin didn't.

Safin and Roger are both class acts... The respect is obviously mutual.

Re: Safin/Fed

I wouldn't call them friends but rather very good acquaintances. Marat and Roger always speak very nicely of each other and have a lot of respect for one another. They also won a doubles title together a few years ago

ah so much love and respect you actually feel their hugs are for real, not like Djokovic's (insert-word-since-I-lack-any-to-describe) hugs.

Re: Safin/Fed

The best quoute from the article is when Fed says that, "Safin is larger than life." Not to get too psychological but I bet that every now and then Fed would like to go wild and that Marat respects the discipline and sacrifice that Fed has made. At the end of the day, their talent was equal and what seperated them was personality, work ethic, temperment and health. That is what made the difference between one being a great player and the other an all time great.

Methinks the armchair analysis is spot-on. Sigh, I will miss this bromance.
