Routine win for Gilles, never got broken, bettered Guccione for aces 14-12, never really needed to get into gear against a fairly poor opponent who, once his serve had gone, his game had gone.
Allez Gilles! and his sexy passing shots
Yes a routine win in the end, but from what I saw the Gooch gave Simon a pretty good match for the first two sets. I was actually quite surprised at how much Guccione's improved his ground game and I really think he'll do well this year barring injury. Simon was genuinely frustrated by the Gooch's service and did well to keep on top of things in the second set. Once that went Gilles's way, Guccione just lost a lot of confidence and went a bit wayward mentally... had a few of those BP points been played a bit better by Chris, it could've been a different story.

Nadal is more conservative than Margaret Thatcher.
"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."-Pat Rafter silencing the Nadull fanboys
At first Gooch upset Simon with these aces and successful net escapades; the French looked like could find no remedy (despite holding own serve comfortably).
The monumentum changed when Gooch could break at 4-4 in the 2nd set; there was 0-30 and a challenge that overruled decision in Simon's favour. From that moment on, Gooch genuinely struggled in rallies (even if it lasted 2-3 shots boo hoo). Also later his net game got worse.
Guccione is shameful winning 7 games in three sets at home with his serve, even if Simon is a good receiver. It's a pity because besides good serve he can hit sometimes nice volleys and groundstrokes from both sides but zero passion in his tennis

complete meltdown by gooch.
but good display from simon who is showing why he is a top ten player.
he was up 7-6 *4-5 40-15 on serve an loses 4 straight points to lose the set and then wind + simon took over the match.
