AO R1: Gonzalez d Hewitt 5-7 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3

So sad for Hewitt. He is truly done. Predictably, the match went to 5 sets, and, at least for me, Hewitt lost as predicted.
Nice for Gonzalez though. If Lleyton can't win in Australia with everyone on his side, then .... he is finished.

AO R1 González d. Hewitt | 57 62 62 36 63

It wasn't the best quality nor the best passionate match either.
Both players looked rusty, esp. Hewitt. It is such a pity to see that the only apparent problem that Lleyton has is lack of confidence. That plays against him basically all time nowadays!

Feña did well enough to win, had moments of brightness during the 2nd and 3rd but nothing too awesome.

Fair enough

Congrats Feña.

Re: AO R1 González d. Hewitt | 57 62 62 36 63

Painful loss for Hewitt, and proof he just isn't the same player anymore. In the past this is exactly the kind of match he'd have dug out, today he just got so horribly tentative on big points, hitting too many DFs and all but gifted breaks of serve to an "inujured" Gonzalez. Gonzo looked very good... for stretches, not AO 07 form, but dangerous nonetheless.

14.

But what a sad loss for Hewitt. I used to dislike him, but lately, I can't. I thought he was gonna pull it out.

enough threads?

Fernando! He looked pretty sharp in the 2nd and 3rd set then lost his edge. Hewitt tenacious as always but not the player he used to be. Happy Fena lasted this out but to Hewitt.

MTF

Key win for Feña, hope he can build some form once again.

Too bad for Lleyton, i always liked him, it's so sad to see him with that ranking and losing in 1st rd of the AO. Hope he makes a comeback this season.

Hewitt played a technically inept match. Hit to the backhand you mug, its not quantum physics. Especially loving that genius approach shot to Gonzo's forehand on BP in the fifth.

My eyes are still bleeding from Gonzo's garbage technique on the backhand.

Tough loss, but in the other hand he might to consider switching to mini tennis. His shots were so short in the most part of the match and they were screaming to Gonzo - hit me, hit me harder as you can. And he was doing just that. And plus 11 DFs. I wonder how this went to 5 sets, with even a chance for Lleyton to win at the start of the 5th. Looks like Rusty is still rusty and he needs to practice his ground strokes and hit with biger depth on them.

Heartbreaking. What can I say?! I'm shattered. 1st, 4th and 5th stes were close, 2nd and 3rd Gonzo was just way too good. Well done Gonzo, and good luck for the rest of the tournament.

Lleyton, you hit way too much to the forehand, but you tried. You're a great champion, a bad way to end your last Australian Open, but thanks for the memories.

Re: AO R1 González d. Hewitt | 57 62 62 36 63

What a frustrating match

First set was quite competitive, then Gonzo stepped up 3 gears and just hit Hewitt off the court in the 2nd and 3rd sets while Hewitt just fed balls back to his forehand :retard: 4th set Gonzo slipped a bit and the 5th set was just

Hewitt just wasted so many chances, played ineffectually for too much of the time and made no consistent attempt to attack the Gonzo backhand. Hewitt's fortune's rose and fell based on Gonzo's game, except for that 5th set... but he just made way too many errors and that first serve percentage was terrible

Oh and two perfectly timed injury timeouts by Gonzo in that 5th set
