Exclamation AO 1R: Astonishing comeback of Hanescu: 3-6 3-6 7-6(7) 7-6(4) 8-6 over Hernych

4 hours 32 minutes

That's one of the best comebacks in Grand Slam history! Hanescu saved a match point in two sets and was 4 points away from losing fifth set!

3rd set: Hernych was serving for the match at 5:4; Hanescu was 6:7 down in the tie-break on Hernych's serve
4th set: Hanescu was losing *3:4 (two BP's), *4:5 (second MP)
5th set: Hernych was serving for the match at 6:5

***
It's fifth case in Australian Open history that a player who lost first two sets won another tight-three:

1980: 1R - U.Marten d. C.Letcher 4-6 1-6 7-6 7-5 8-6
1982: 3R - S.Denton d. J.Alexander 6-7 4-6 7-6 7-5 7-6
1999: 1R - J.Knippschild d. W.Arthurs 3-6 4-6 7-6 7-5 8-6
2004: 3R - G.Canas d. T.Henman 6-7 5-7 7-6 7-5 9-7
2009: 1R - V.Hanescu d. J.Hernych 3-6 3-6 7-6 7-6 8-6

It's amazing how the things can quickly turn around. Hanescu at one point of career was 0-5 in MP matches and won three matches after saving MP's in the last 6 months.

BTW, it's his 100th tournament in career and 99th win

Great comeback, thanks for the stats Voo. I'm pulling for Victor, but both players were pretty miserable at winning service points today, 59% total service points won by each of them. I'm afraid it will be a quick exit after this for Hanescu, and I haven't even looked at the draw yet.

Maybe (next Sela or Schuettler) but I think the feeling after winning such a match must be amazing. Most players can only dream about a win like this one, obviously it'd be tremendous to win that match in the deciding stage of a tournament but big credit to the Romanian after all.

I doubt that a win after saving match points in three sets has ever happened in the Open Era, Hanescu was really close to do it today.

That would have been amazing saving MPs in all 3 sets, still surely a rewarding victory for The Victor and a painful loss for Jan. Draw actually doesn't sound too bad, I figured he had a seed up next. Still I wouldn't put any money on Victor after today's performance.

Expected scoreline from Legend... He's playing mind games with Murray now... They will meet in the quarters and Legend will apply the final blow... He could be very tired for the final against Fedex but that's no problem he'll just serve it out... He's gonna eat Sela like Fit Dave is eating pancakes...

Hernych was actually serving for the match in the 3rd, and had matchpoint on his serve on the tiebreak, then went on to lose the next 3 points, fuckin disgrace.

Do you remember the scoreline when he was serving for the match in the third? 5:4 or 6:5? I remember that Hanescu earlier in this set was leading 4:2, in the fourth set was similar scenario, before Hernych had 2nd MP, Hanescu had double break point for a 4:1 led

Hernych was up 5-4 in the third. I thought he might have had an MP in that game too but I'm not so sure now. I think it was a several deuce game. (Naturally, Voo only showed up when the tiebreak began. Hehe! )

Anyway, this has to be one of most ridiculous matches I've ever followed. If only there was a camera on that court. After the first two sets I was just thinking about how pathetic Hanescu was for losing to Hernych like that. At the same time though, I was almost never worried until Hernych served for it in the fifth. In the end, Hanescu scores big time fighter points with me but the match should never have gone to Hernych in the first place IMO.

I would add Koubek's '02 win over Saulnier to that list if 6-4 is a tight enough score.
