Tennis is on a high

Im specifically referring to the top 4 here, although outside of the top 4 it's not like it's boring at all. Murray is knocking hard on the door to make it the big four, but of course he'd have to win a slam to claim that honour. But even if he doesn't win a slam he could still break into the top 3. This creates a very interesting scenario because that means the end of the top 3, at least in the rankings anyway. Who do you think will be the first to be displaced if anyone?

There is some distance between the top 3 and Murray right now but it seems like it's only a question of time before the gap is closed. But then again the top 3 is seriously good players so there is not even a guarantee that Murray will break into the top 3. I think most people would pick Nole to be displaced, but just a few days ago he had a chance to be nr.2, and he's still a very talented player. I think things will just get tighter and tighter at the top.

That is why the AO is such a HUGE tournament for the top 4 right now. It will set the tone for the coming year and whoever comes out on top will have given themselves a significent boost. Of course it would be ideal for Murray to win, but if Roger wins that would put him and Rafa even further out of reach of the rest. So there is everything to play for.

Djokovic obviously won the Aussie Open last year whilst Murray got knocked out in round 1, so it is very likely that Murray will go a long way in closing the gap to the top 3 in just 2 weeks time.

Murray has nothing to defend except a MM event until the clay season starts. By the end of the first hard court season Murray will be so close he can smell them. A great clay season and they will be smelling him. World No 1 Andrew Murray.

Re: Tennis is on a high

can someone clear up if Murray is disadvantaged in the pursuet of the number 1 ranking because of Davis Cup ranking points this season? and that Nadal is heavily advantaged?

If this is the case... then the validity of the ranking system has gone completely... because its not a fair situation. Therefore wants the point of the ranking system to prove who's the best? I can imagine the tennis world putting a * on it to suggest what the rankings will be like without the davis cup... therefore whats the point in having rankings for davis cup?

Re: Tennis is on a high

First time i here of this, of course Davis Cup shouldnt count for rankings. That would be a joke. Murray shouldnt have a disadvantage at becoming nr 1, he doesnt have much to defend from last year cept of the end of the year. He's got the least points to defend from the top four so there should be no excuses. He better make a deep run into the AO or he's done.

They'll be getting ranking points for Davis Cup starting this year, but this only counts for countries playing in World Group I and you only get points for winning live rubbers. There was a thread that explained all the rules and stuff.

Re: Tennis is on a high

I think DC counts has an alternative to a 500 as far as i know. I think the only players it could affect are Spain and France who have a few players close to the top 10. I can't see it affecting the rest but I'm no expert. Possibly Argentina as well.
