Anyone else thinking Monfils will be this years 'surprise' finalist'?

With that draw it's hard to see him not doing well this year. His draw is so favourable and despite the fact he's carrying a little niggle he should breeze into the second week. The injury is perhaps the only thing that could stop him from going as deep as his draw should allow him. He's still patchy in his effort at times and I don't think he'll win the AO but I could see him adding to the long list of surprise finalists in Melbourne...

If I had to choose a "surprise finalist" for this year, it should be him or Simon.
Because yes, they have a good draw.

And 3rd choice would be Gulbis : he also has a good draw, and somebody said that he can suffer very well the heat and the tiredness in Australia.

I can see him making the QF. But I don't think he can make it past Nadal once again.

I think it'll be Roger v Rafa. That's what I hope for also.

Monfils won't get past Nadal IMO. The one with the best chance to be a surprise finalist is Nalbandian, if he can get past Djokovic and Federer.

He has the heart and the weapons but the maniacal way he plays leaves one wondering how far he can go before he gets himself injured or out of steam.

A first round played 2 years and a half ago in Murray's worse surface.

Surely that was most important.

All of them? Wow, here was me thinking that they'd played only once in a GS. On Clay. In 2006.

Yes, that's more relevant than a hard court match played 3 months ago.

Re: Anyone else thinking Monfils will be this years 'surprise' finalist'?

Monfils may have to get past Youzhny, Almagro (whose matches against Federer on hard show that he's a bit underrated on the surface), and Ancic before the quarter-finals. How is that an easy draw? The Frenchman's habit of treating every match like it's a grand slam final may be entertaining, but it doesn't exactly correspond with the energy conservation that is an absolute must for the AO. That said, I do see him making a date with Nadal and coming through after 3-odd hours of fist-pumping and repeatedly screaming "Allez!!!" at the top of his lungs. He's got a good chance, at least, but if he goes on to face Murray in the semi-finals he doesn't have a prayer. The potential is there for him to reach the Scot's level at some time in the future, but at present his tactics and his stamina are completely inadequate to match the world number 4 at present.

So even if Monfils has enough in the tank to beat Nadal (who looked tame in Doha, and struggled physically contrary to official reports), I think he'll be too exhausted to make a go of it in the semis, whomever he meets.
