Federer vs "New Balls"?

Isn't it kind of embarrassing for Fed to be dissing the new generation? Don't sportsman in other leagues always take the young guys under their wing for mentoring? Instead it seems to me(and I'm a hugest Fedfan) that Fed comes off as bitter and angry because they have the temerity to beat him?

Very interesting point of view. And I think you are right.
The one he always praises is Rafa, but have you ever heard Roger saying sth nice about Nole or Muzza or other young guns? Never.
And it was Fed who started this little discussion between him and Murray few days ago saying that Andy isn't the favourite of AO 2009.

Actually the very first time Nadal beat him in Miami 2004, he had nice things to say - "Rafa will be future #1". My guess is at the time he thought Nadal would not be a threat to him for another 3 years. However by 2006 French Open final he said - "His game is one dimensional". Already bitter and angry that a 20yo was whupping him on clay over and over again with 6-1 H2H at the time.

Re: Federer vs "New Balls"?

15-19 vs New Balls(Nadal, Nole & Murray), I don't count Tsonga/Simon in this equation

No wonder his frustration is building, he was utterly dominating his generation(Hewitt, Roddick, Nalby, Denko, Youzhny, etc...) and along come the New Balls and he can't even manage to win 50% of the time.

Nice to find Fed fan who is able to be objective. Good!

Re: Federer vs "New Balls"?

No way. All this comes from the swift press interviews after every match. Fed is too kind in answering every question formulated by the press guys, and he tries to express his candid points of view with a fresh sense of humour, giving in some way no trascendency to his words. When he talks about other players, even those who have beaten him, he takes on the hardship of pointing out some characteristic of their game and giving kind of advice. I see this as condescension and a real proof of friendship toward them. He could easily say "No comment" at every question involving his colleagues. Then everybody would shout what a bastard this jesusfed has become.

Obviously you are implying that Fed relishes the chance to put down the New Balls any chance he gets. Fed thought he'd dominate the New Balls for the first few years and by 2009 they'd start to beat him maybe 40% of the time. The fact that it didn't go according to his plan makes him very bitter. He was looking quite angry at the end of the Murray match in Doha....
