Is a Lendl like GS career possible in the modern game?

Lendl won his first grand slam at the age of 24 which was considered late even in his era and went on to win 8 slams. Can a player bloom so late nowadays in slams? He did get to a few GS finals as a precursor to his narrow win against JMac at the FO though I am not taking them into account since he didn't have a win against his name until that 1984 FO.

I don't think it is possible anymore with better racket technology, better nutrition and fitness. Also I think more young players nowadays are much more confident about their ability to win the big one.

Need ideas for a new signature...

Re: Is a Lendl like GS career possible in the modern game?

Lendl could have peaked earlier, had he not have had to contend against Borg, Connors and McEnroe when they were in their prime. Also, the fact that his success was rather a result of hard work than raw talent probably contributed to his late prime.

In response to your question, I think a late peak is possible albeit unlikely. However, Lendl was an exception even his days. I don't see how today's racket technology and nuitrition would make it harder to bloom in your late 20s. Look at Agassi.

I think all this attempt to try and project Lendl late-career success onto Federer is forgetting one thing - Lendl was a friggen legend with a capital L. Federer would love to have Lendl's career!

Davydenko started peaking at exactly the same age. Rafter reached his first of four GS finals at the age of 24. It does happen sometimes.

The thing I always remember about Lendl was how desperately he wanted to win Wimbledon. I always quite liked him and wanted him to win Wimbly. Even when he played the final against my first tennis crush, Mr Cash in 1987. There was something very vulnerable about Lendl at Wimbledon the nearer he got to his dream.

yeah... heh heh... i remember that... the pothead, s & v'er cash defeating the cold, robotic lendl... lendl said that it was the final vs cash in 87, not becker in 86 that was his best chance... and yeah, i felt for the big guy at the end... not playing the french so he could increase his preparation on grass by up to 6 weeks... obsession is only a word i feel in this case, and it probably doesnt do it justice...

I hope Roger doesn't do anything foolish in pursuit of French Open like skip Indian Wells/Miami to spend more time on clay. More time on clay won't beat Nadal, different tactic will.

But of course, Federer won more Grand Slams so he is more successfull in that sense, and Federer, I'm sure mostly everyone would agree, is a better player than Lendl. Federer on a bad day would beat Lendl in his prime.

a fairweather Fed Fan you are indeed
i guess you`re trying to be sarcastic/amuse yourself

*Lendl`s record in Slam finals = 8 won, 11 lost...
*Federer`s record in Slam final = 13 won, 4 lost...
