Colin Ebelthite wins AO WC in Play-Offs

Ebelthite beats Groth to win wildcard

Melbourne Park, 21 December 2008
Tennis Australia
Colin Ebelthite pumps his fist after defeating Sam Groth in the Australian Open Wildcard Play-off men's final.
Ella Ling
South Australia’s Colin Ebelthite has capped off his best-ever year with a win in the AO Play-off, gaining a wildcard into the maindraw of Australian Open 2009.
Ebelthite defeated AIS Pro tour teammate, big-serving Sam Groth 1-6 7-6(1) 6-4 6-4 in the final, a match which lasted for more than two and a half hours at Melbourne Park.
Australian Open 2009 will be Ebelthite’s debut Grand Slam appearance.
“It hasn't really sunk in yet but it's starting to and feeling good,” Ebelthite said after the match.
“The first set I probably started off a little bit slow but Sam played a really good first set. Second set he was on top early, I managed to hang in there and then had a couple of chances, which I couldn't quite take in trying to break him. But I played a really good tiebreaker and then took a couple of chances in the third and fourth sets so really happy.
“When you're playing qualifying or the play-off you always know there is an opportunity there [to play in a Grand Slam] but for me being ranked 250th it's still not quite there yet so I'm going to really enjoy it,” Ebelthite continued.
Ebelthite is looking forward to returning to South Australia for Christmas and a couple of days of well-earned rest, before getting back in training with AIS coach Paul Baccanello.
Earlier in the day Jelena Dokic held off a determined challenge from 16-year-old Monika Wejnert from Queensland, winning the AO Play-off final 6-7(3) 7-5 6-3.

Nice win for Colin. Groth is not a bad player from my recollections.

Andreev - Cilic - Dolgopolov - De Bakker - Djokovic - Gulbis - Haase - Hrbaty - J Johansson - Kucera - Kuznetsov - Russell - Simon - Sweeting - Thron

Dominika Cibulková

Re: Colin Ebelthite wins AO WC in Play-Offs

It seems kind of hard to find full draw info/results for these play-offs in both Aus in the US. The Tennis Australia site only has the new article about the final, but the tournament data section is from last year's play-off. Similarly the USTA website has no info on the US play-off. Anyone know a source?

Re: Colin Ebelthite wins AO WC in Play-Offs

It looks like the full Aus play-off results can be found from this page:

http://www.tennis.com.au/pages/defau...4&pageId=13869

Final:
Ebelthite def. Groth 1-6 7-6 6-4 6-4

SF:
Groth def. Sirianni 7-6(5) 6-4
Ebelhite def. Marinko Matosevic 6-4 6-4

QF:
Colin Ebelthite d Peter Luczak 6-4 6-2
Marinko Matosevic d Carsten Ball 6-3 6-7(7) 6-3
Joseph Sirianni d Brendan McKenzie 5-7 6-1 6-1
Samuel Groth d Robert Smeets 7-6 6-3

RR Day 3:
Groth def. Ball 6-4 5-7 7-6(3)
Andrew Gregory def. Dayne Kelly 3-6 6-3 6-1
Smeets def. John Millman 7-6 6-7 5-3
Ebden def. Matosevic 5-7 6-2 6-2
Sirianni def. Tomic 6-3 6-1
Andrew Thomas def. Ebelthite 5-7 2-1 ret.
Luczak def. Stephen Hoh 7-5 6-2
Brendan MacKenzie def. Brydan Klein 3-6 7-6(2) 6-4

RR Day 2:
Tomic def. Dane Propoggia 6-7 6-4 3-0 ret.
Sirianni def. Ebelthite 7-5 7-6
Luczak def. Klein 6-2 6-4
Matosevic def. Smeets 4-6 6-2 6-1
...

RR Day 1:
Ebelthite def. Tomic 3-6 6-3 7-6(6)
...

How the hell did Ebelthite get out the group stage
His group's final standing looked like this:

Name, Wins, Sets, Games
1 Joseph Sirianni 3 6 - 0 39 - 21
2 Colin Ebelthite 1 3 - 4 35 - 36
3 Bernard Tomic 1 3 - 5 34 - 39
4 Andrew Thomas 1 1 - 1 7 - 8
5 Dane Propoggia 0 1 - 4 17 - 28

Ebelthite's retirement in his last group match must have been tactical (screwing Tomic on rules).

Didn't know that, Ebelthite could potentially be investigated if that is true.

Re: Colin Ebelthite wins AO WC in Play-Offs

I don't think Colin's injury was illegit. Had Tomic beaten Sirianni on Day 3, Colin would have screwed himself over. Depends on the OOP obviously.
